DIDN'T LIKE WASTE
Spiced Crab Apples Turn
Into Growing Concern Here
By MAflOAIlBT MAOEE
Cnpllal Journal Writer
Because Mrs. Kenneth Bcrnet. 632 Dearborn Ave., couldn't stand to
sec crab apples go to waste she found herself in the spiced crab apple
business this year.
For some time now Mrs. Bcrnet on asking friends what she can
bring for a meal has gotten the answer "some spiced crab apples."
And often she has given them to
This year she found two trees
of crab apples and thinking they
were so beautiful they needed to
be used she canned some of them
in glass fruit jars, labeled them
and began selling them to stores.
Moved to Cnnnery
Business boomed to the point
that she could no longer can them
in glass jars at home so she
moved lo a custom cannery,
though she still makes her syrup
for the crab apples at home.
Telling of her project Mrs. Bcr
net commented, "I started on my
own here at home In a few fruit
jars that I had. Then I had more
than I could do at home." She
said that at first she picked her
own crab apples, but that later
her husband helped her wilh the
picking and she did the canning
in all she canned about 300 cans.
Wilh the enlargement of the busi
nessin additinnto selling to stores
Mrs. Bernct now has one restaur
ant using her crab apples and
cans these in gallon containers
Mrs. Bcrnet found she had to have
a label and a brand name. The
business is still too small to have
them printed commercially so her
husband worked out a block print
for the label.
Printed Label Sells
"At lirst the merchants were a
little skeptical of the label, but

A hat designer in San Fran.
cisco at one time, Mrs. Bernet, ex
plained that the Dolgo crab apple
which has a brilliant fruit that is
large and mealy, is the one lo
use for spicing, noting that they
wore difficult lo find.
"I was thinking one day," how
did I ever get started in this,
when I remembered that as a
youngster, I took a first on' elder
berry jelly, a second on an apple
jelly and a third on blackberry
jelly at the Oregon State fair,
Mrs. Bernct said.
Recipe Came from OSC
Recalling that she was living on
the ranch of her grandfather near
Philomath, Jason Leo Brandc-
berry, who started what became
the Hammond Lumber company,
at the time she took those prizes,
Mrs. Bernct said that she also
thought the recipe she used as a
basis for her pickled crab apples
was secured from Oregon State
college by her mother when they
lived there. Here she noled that
her mother's mother had been
Corelia Jane Copcland, whose fam
ily was among the early Oregon
settlers.
Though she finds getting t h c
proper crab apple a bit of a prob
lem. Mrs. Bernct has plans for
continuing her project next year.
However, she will make some
changes. Instead of making up the
syrup at the time she is working
on the apples she will make it
ahead of lime and seal it up in
jugs. She thinks she may have. to

PNP Disputes
Claim Federal
Dams Battled
WASHINGTON IP - An attor
ney for the Pacific Northwest
Power Co. contended Tuesday that
private utilities in the Pacific
Northwest area have for many
years said there were power short
ages in the region.
Allan Smith, a PNP lawyer, was
attempting to disprove, during a
Federal Power Commission hear
ing, a Portland power consultant's
statement that private utilities in
the Pacific Northwest have been
fighting federal power construc
tion. ,
The consultant, Samuel Moment,
had testified Monday that three
of the organizing companies of
Pacific Northwest Power had
waged an intensive publicity cam
paign against federal dam con
struction. Smith, during cross examina
tion of Moment, said the power
load forecasts made by private
utilities were more accurate than
Ihosc mndc by the Bonneville
Power Administration.
Smith said private utility offi
cials for many years have urged
Congress lo construct federal pow
er facilities in the Pacific North
west. Moment countered with the
statement that the private utility
overtures to Congress were "nul
lified" by a national advertising
campaign directed by the private
utilities against federal power.
"For a few years," Moment
said, "(he utilities presumed to
favor federal generation but they
carried water on the olher shoul
dor by means of the advertising
campaign.
The exchange between Smith
and Moment, a witness for public
power lorces, came during
FPC hearing on PNP's applica
tion for a license lo construct the
Mountain Sheep and Pleasant Val
Icy dams on the Snake River.

DEAR DOROTHY DIX: My folks constantly tease me because;
my boy friend is a year younger than I. Hc' a very nice buy,'?

DEAR LORNA: Just what is your problem, dear? To have the
man come to the house and break your mother's heart, to break your
own by ending Ihe association, or to meet him in a town and break
your reputation? My decision would be to, let your own heart be
shattered; it would be soonest mended.
DEAR DOROTHY DIX: I grew up wilh Tim, and am very fond of
him. In fact, it was generally assumed that some day we would
be married. Recently he moved to another town, wrote me a few
letters, then slopped. Whenever he comes back, he comes to sec me.
Do you think he really likes me or Is just trying to be friendly?
Betsy.
DEAR BETSY: I think he really likes you, but has a severe
case of writer's cramp an affliction at any age but an absolute
scourge in adolescence. Make the most of your times together,
send him clippings of hometown activities, news items of personal -interest
and he won't forget you in between.

strong and stubborn. I have doubts about the success of our marriage.
Puzzled Thomas.
DEAR THOMAS: This is an occasion where it pays to be doubt
ing as well as puzzled. If a two-month friendship has Impressed you
wilh the young lady's obstinacy, think what a lifetime will do!
DEAR DOROTHY DIX: My boy friend recently got Into trouble.
He's paying for his mistake now, wilh a prison term. I love him
very much and would never be happy with anyone else. My parents
don't know about the situation, since he lives in another state. Should
I tell them? Kay,
DEAR KAY: By all means, tell, and rely on their judgment, even
if you do consider it harsh. The nature of your friend's difficulties
could have a large bearing on your future happiness. Your parents'
counsel can help you determine whether to stick with him or not.
Be guided by their decision.
Send your problem to Dorolhy DIx. Or write lor her flee leaflet
