Spring Opens
Fish Counting
At Dalles Dam
' PORTLAND Ml.- Army Engi
neers reported Saturday that fish
counting will begin at The Dalles
Dam next April.
' Women will bo employed for the
unusual job as they are at Bonne
ville and McNary dams, the corps
stated.
- Two counting stations are plan
ned for The Dalles Dam, one at
the north fish ladder on the Wash
ington shore and the other at the
cast fish ladder on the Oregon
shore. The count will be made
daily from 4 p. m. to (I p. m. and
will continue through December 1.
,pThe counters will be required to
identify some SO species of fish
Purpose of the counting is to de
termine if the number of fish is
declining and if the breeding stock
is being endangered. The count
also enables biologists to deter
mine periods of migration for the
various species and to learn the
tributary streams these fish use
for spawning purposes.
. Daily reports of the fish counts
are sent to newspapers, commer
cial fishermen, packing compan
ies, state organizations and other
interested persons.
Monthly reports arc sent to key
organizations of various slate and
federal agencies and to individ
uals. The Dalles Dam will raise the
total of projects on the Columbia
River with fish counting facilities
to four. In addition to Bonneville
and McNary, counting is carried
on at Rock Island Dam at Wcnat
chce, Wash.
Counting of fish at Bonneville
Dam started with men in 1037.
Women took over the job during
the war and were told they would
be replaced by veterans. But the
veterans found the work too nerve
wracking and women have been
on the job ever since.

Mrs. David Gentry presiding. The
group voted to sponsor Brownie
Troop 147 this year which con
sists of third grade girls.
Plans were made for a rummage
sale to be held in November with
Mrs. Floyd Bobbilt nnd Mrs. Lorl-
mcr McLaughlin as co-chairmen,
and Raymond Cherry nnd Mrs
Emll Trnschel, members.
Room count award was given to
Mrs. Branson's room live, grade
three, for having the most-mothers
attending tho meeting.
D. Vlrsil Lamb, school principal,
announced that tho school will
havo Its annual open house Nov,
16, from 7:30 to B:30 p.m. Teach
ers will be In their respective
rooms during open house ana have
planned refreshments for tho par
ents in mo mum purposo room
afterwards.
James Garvin of the American
Logion will present an American
flag to each of the three new
rooms recently added to the
school.
. The entire sixth grade class un
der tho direction of Mrs. Marilyn
Barnctt presented several songs
while trumpets were played by
four boys.
.' Also as a part of the program
the group enjoyed a whito ele
phant sale. Refreshments were
served at the close of (he meeting
by mothers of Room II.
20 Elk Illegally Slain in

20 illegal kills of elk on tho open
ing day of the elk season in the
Weyerhaeuser Timber Co. woods
near here, state police reported.
Sgt. Walter llcrshey said the il
legal kills were mostly of spike
elk plus a number of cow rlk and
calves. One three-point biirk deer
and an otter also wero shot, he
said.
