HOLLYWOOD Uft-The big news
in local TV this week was the
globbering an independent station,
KTTV. Eave the networks with the
first of its MGM pictures, "30 Sec
onds over To
kyo." The station
snagged almost
double the rat
ings of the three
network channels
during the two
and a half hours
of the 1944 mov
ie. This no doubt
caused constern
ation among the o Thomas
networks. Certainly there was ju
bilation at KTTV.
"The results far exceeded our
hopes," said KTTV boss Richard
A. Moore. "We are delighted."
He added that the rating vie-'
tory offers hope for the independ
ent stations to compete with the
networks, adding: 1
"Naturally it is hard for us lo
compete with entertainment
shows. We can't afford to pay Ed
.Sullivan $100,000 a week for only,
one market. The networks can pay
him that for many markets.
"But these movies can put us in
a competitive position, as the rat
ings proved."
Moore pooh - poohed network
fears that the influx of old movies
will curtail creativity in TV.
"On the contrary," he said, "I
think it will force the networks
to create belter shows.
"Faced with the competition of
our movies, they must come up
with more imaginative program
ming, fhere must be something
wrong when they lose 80 per cent
of their audience in one week."
KTTV, which is owned by the
Chandler newspaper interests, ac
quired the MGM library for 4 mil
lion dollars on a seven-year lease.
In addition, it sold the studio a
quarter interest in KTTV.
Moore estimated that only about
20 of the 725 films are unusable.

Governor Smith Again
Demands
Holmes Tell the Truth
Governor Elmo Smith will again set the
record straight. A week ago the Governor
demanded his opponent tell the truth.
Instead his opponent has increased his
misrepresentations. The people of Oregon
deserve better treatment from one who
wants to be Governor.
By contrast Elmo Smith has been talk
ing about matters important to Oregon
ians and the future of the state. However
he feels he must put this constructive
program aside long enough to give you
the real truth.
