Dr. James R. Lyles, head of the
education department at Willam
ette university, will speak to the
Oregon Department of Classroom
Teachers Friday evening at Lin
coln high school in Portland on
Problems of Professional and
Public Relations in Education
Presently director of graduate
study at Willamette, Dr. Lyles,
was formerly assistant superin
tendent in charge of instruction
of the city schools of Charlotte,
NX., and served as teacher,
coach, and principal.

Many sixth grade pupils in
Marion and Polk counties will en
ter the nationwide picture parade
contest being held in connection
with Physically Handicapped
Week, Oct. 7-13.
The contest is sponsored by the
President's committee on Physi
cally Handicapped, Arch L.
Brewster, EPH chairman for the
two counties, said. Approval of
all school principals has been
obtained.
Winning entries, Brewster said,
would be displayed in Salem
stores and will be eligible for
awards.

Three Timber
Tracts Sold
Three tracts of Bureau of Land
Management timber brought over
a half-million dollars at an oral
auction sale held October 2 by
Salem District Forester Otto C. F.
Krueger. A total of $512,155.60
was offered for 14,254,000 board
feet.
The highest bid received for
Douglas fir during the sale was
offered by Murphy Lumber C.
of Portland. A total of 3,167,000
bd. ft. was" included in this Polk
county tract.
A Benton county tract contain
ing 3,267,000 bd. ft. of Douglas
fir was purchaled by Hazel Glen
Logging Co. of Philomath, Ore
gon, for $38.85 per 1,000 bd. ft.
The final tract containing 6,
603,000 bd. it. of Douglas fir lo
cated in Linn county, was pur
chased by M & M Wood Working
Co., a division of Simpson Red
wood Co. of Portland at $36.00
per 1,000 bd. ft.

Committee to Save the Tax Refer
endum, an organization- formed I
recently to oppose November bal
lot title No. 1 in Marion county,
will be" held Wednesday at the
Labor Temple at 8 p.m., it was
announced by Guy Jonas, secretary-treasurer
of the group.
Speaker at the meeting will be
Tom Scanlon: director of educa
tion of the State AFL-CIO Coun
cil. Scanlon will be introduced,
by Herb E. Barker, co-chairman .
of the committee.."

is presently at work sending let
ters to all organization's in Marion
county, offering speakers to op
pose the proposed constitutional
amendment to allow immediate :
effect clauses on legislative tax ,
bills.
