Dinner Honors

paid more than $100,000 today to
honor Walter F. George and re
plenish the party's senatorial cam
paign chest.
All avowed Democratic pres
idential aspirants planned to be
on hand lor the dinner tonight,
but the star of the show was the
78-year-old, gray-haired retiring
senator from Georgia.
Tickets cost $100 apiece, includ
ing those bought by Adlai Steven
son, Estes Ketauver, Averell Har
riman and Gov. A. B. (Happy)
Chandler of Kentucky, the latest
entrant into the race for party
standard bearer.
Whatever is left over after pay
in; for the dinner and for a pres
ent for Sen. George and his wife
will go to the Senate Democratic
Senatorial Campaign Committee
to help, try to elect Democratic
candidates for the Senate this
year.
Senators Smathers of Florida
and Humphrey of Minnesota, who
arranged the affair, said the ticket
sale already had topped 1,000,
double what they anticipated
when they started work on the af
fair, George will be. the principal
speaker.

engineer's estimate was turned
i'.i Wednesday by a syndicate of
pur contractors for the first phase
v.' the Rocky Reach Dam on the
Columbia River.
The contract will be let by the
Oiielan County Public Utility Dis
trict after all five bids are studied.
They ranged up to $15,800,000.
The Initial work will complete 33
per cent of the dam, nine miles up
stream from here. The PUD cngi
:"!cr'r estimate for this phase was
:T) million dollars.
The syndicate making the low
hid is comprised of the Arundel
Corp. of Baltimore; L. E. Dixon
10. of San Gabriel, Calif.; Hunkin
1 onkey Construction Co. of Cleve
' md and the American Pipe and
Construction Co. of Los Angeles.
Construction work is scheduled to
start in the fall.

U. S. airman at Kimpo airfield
was shot to death Wednesday by
a Korean youth after an argument
over money, an Air Force spokes
man said. I
The spokesman said Sun Se Ung,
16-year-old employee of the base's
laundry shop, went to the air
man's quarters in the shop, got a
.45 caliber pistol and shot him four
times. The youth was quoted as
saying the airman was in debt to
him. The name of the airman is
being withheld pending notifica
tion of next of kin.

picture contract from RKO Studio.
Miss Dors, here for her first
Hollywood film, said she may also
remain for a comedy with Tom
. Ewell at 20th Century-Fox.

"Oh, I don't think so. I have
a contract with the Rank organ
ization for a picture a year in
England and I plan to make pic
tures both here and in England
for the next few years."
Financial details of her RKO
contract have yet to be worked
out. Her current picture is "I
Married a Woman," in which she
costars with TV comic George
Gobel. "

R. E. Dugdale, Cornelius, was
named as a new member of the
Oregon Filbert commission Wed
nesday by Gov. Elmo Smith.
Rov A. Ward, Portland, was re
appointed to a three-year term
on the commission. Ward repre
sents the filbert growers.
Dugdale will succeed William
B. Chandlee, Hillsboro, and will
also serve for three years, repre
senting the handlers.

niture and Bedding Advisory
council. He represents the steri
