Thursday ordered the Brazilian
army, navy and air forces to take
over police duties in Rio de Ja
neiro if necessary to suppress
riots' of students protesting in
creased streetcar fares.
Military officers already have
taken over direct command of the
capital's police. Violent outbreaks
throughout the city Wednesday
night forced a 12-hour suspension
of streetcar service. When the
cars began moving again Thurs
day morning, a noliceman armed
with a light machinegun was post
ed on each one.
Sporadic student attacks on the
streetcars have been occurring for
a week. They developed into seri
ous riots Tuesday night. Wednes
day night almost (lie entire city
; was thrown into turmoil when po
lice battled mobs of demonstrat
ing students.

passersby were wounded at least
two by bullets, it was reported
reliably. Police said 32 persons

Crashes Home
PORTLAND 11 A city bus
crashed into a southeast Portland
home Tuesday night alter a colli
sion with a pickup truck . at an
intersection. Drivers of both
vehicles and four bus passengers
were injured, none seriously.
Pauline Barbur, 15. was sitting
on the front porch of her home
when the accident occurred. She
said she ran inside when the bus
hurtled across the yard toward
the porch.
"I screamed for my Dad. ...I
jumped up and pushed open the
front door. Then the front walls
tumbled in."
Pauline's father, John Barbur,
estimated damage to his home at
$1,000.
