Aid in Solving
Disappearance
NEW YOFtK. Ifi-The New York
Herald Tribune said today the
Justice Department has asked
lawyer Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr
' he appealed to his client the
Dominican Republic government
to help solve the disappearance of
Dr. Jesus de Galindez.
De Galindez, a citizen of the Do
minican Republic and a lecturer
at Columbia University, vanished
March 12. He had been opposed
to the Dominican regime of Gen
eralissimo Rafael L. Trujillo.
In a dispatch from Washington,
the Herald Tribune said:
Roosevelt, former congressman
and now registered counsel for the
Dominican government, wiote to
Atty. Gen. Herbert Brownell.'Jr
on May 1 to "exert and exhaust
every effort" to solve the mvs
tery. The late President's son also
p " :i he had sent similar anneals
to Gov. Averell Harriman of New
York and Frank S. Hogan, dis
trict attorney of Manhattan.
On May 18, Asst. Atty. Gen
Warren Olney HI acknowledged
Roosevelt's letter and said:
"I am sure it would assist in
the investigation of this matter to
know whether you have addressed
any such appeal to the government
of the Dominican Republic, for
which you are a registered agent,
and, if so, the nature of the re
sponse." The Dominican government has
officially denied any knowledge of
De Galindez's disappearance.
Roosevelt could not be reached
for comment.

a devotee of Thomas Jefferson
and his works, today paid tribute

a man who inspired him to seek

"Jefferson was one of my teach

He said he regarded his visits
to the Jeffersonian shrines in this

hunger strike about two weeks
ago, the British Colonial Office
disclosed Monday.
They refused food for a day or

close exactly what Makarios was
protesting, but it was understood
that he and his colleagues were
concerned about censorship and
delay of cablegrams and letters
they had been writing.

Tonker, 32, was charged Sunday
with murdering his brother-in-law
in an argument over broken dish
es. Sheriff Hobart Belcher said
Jesse Guy Williams, also 32, was
shot at Tonker's home near here,
folloving an argument over break

Ironically, 3-year-old Richie is
the son of Lawrence McClure,
biochemist in the foundation's can
cer section who concentrated on
leukemia studies.

American brotherhood practices
measure up to professions, the
United States "can never win and
hold the confidence of the peoples
of the world," a Negro minister
last night told the National Con
gress of Parents and Teachers.
The Rev. Archibald J. Carey
Jr. of Chicago, addressing a ves
per service before 3,oon delegates,
PTA convention today, said:
"The business of brotherhood,
far from being sentimentalism,
has become the very sinews of
American defense."
The Rev. Mr. Carey, minister
of Quinn Chapel and vice chair
man of President Eisenhower's
Committee on Government Em
ployment Policy, said the.' 24
months since the U.S. Supreme
Court decision against race segre
gation in public schools has wit
nessed "the death struggle of an
old order and the birth pains of
a new order."
He said Franklin D. Roosevelt
and Harry S. Truman "had set a
fast pace."
"But President Eisenhower has
gone the farthest of all. He him
self has set a shining example of
his belief that there shall be no
second-class citizens in the United
States," he declared.
Japan to Ban
Prostitution
TOKYO W-Climaxing an eight-
year fight, Japan's Parliament to
day outlawed all organized pros
titution alter next April 1.
The House of Councillors (Sen
ate) unanimously approved legis
lation making illegal the opera
tion after that date of any type
of establishment for prostitution
purposes. The House of Represen
tatives approved the bill May 15.
The law does not prohibit the na
tion's estimated 140,000 prostitues
from operating Independently. Its
penalties, up to 10 years in prison,

The law does strike, however,

and other areas. It also prohibits
the age-old Japanese practice of
parents selling their daughters in

Secret Service arrive at the hotel!

They get a blueprint of the hotel
and track every foot Mr. Risen-j
hower may follow on the day of
the occasion. j
If hotel personnel has changed j
substantially since the President '
lr "t visited the place, names of
the new help are furnished to the
Secret Service several days in
advai.ee.
The Secret Service turns the
new names into a large gr -eminent
identification pool and within
a matter of minutes, the men who
protect the life of the President
know the background of the men
who will serve him his banquet
food.
Someone started a story last
weekend that the President goes
to dinner only when a special
White House chef precedes him.
Not true.
If the Secret Service ever be
came so worried about the Presl
was indicated, they probably
would not let the President enter
the hotel. Recurrent stories about
White House food tasters, special
chefs, eagle-eyed spec '', waiters
are interesting, but rr. .hical.
When the President attends a
banquet at, say, the Statler Hotel
here or the Sheraton Tark, the
managers, wanting to have the
best possible service, usually stick
one of their best waiter captains
behind him. This is not a security
measure, but an effort by the
hotel involved to give the Presi
dent the best servicij possible.
The Secret Service has a rather
detailed, working record of the
hotel help in Washington. In ad
vance of the late President Roose
velt's appearance at one local
hotel, the agents of the Secret
Ev.-vice saw to it that neurly 00
persons on the hotel payroll were
let off for the night, at least.
Why did the Secret Service sack
these men and women? The hulk
of them had records of minor
crimes. But crimes Involving vio
lence. Like cutting a husband's
neck. The Secret Service does not
like the idea of domestic knife
slingers being in close proximity
to the President.
