So I practiced constantly. Every
time I walked into a room, I tried
to make an exact mental picture
of it.
But analysis is as Important as
observation, the veteran officer
says, "because it s easy to jump
at conclusions often wrong con
clusions." No one person can master the
science of criminal detection, .says
MacDonald, after nearly a half
century of study. The field is too
wide. The master would have to
know medicine, surgery, chemis
try, law, in addition to being a
technical expert in identification
and detection.
Yet criminal detection is emer
ging as a profession, MacDonald
points out, and while pay is not
in keeping with training and abil
ity, it is improving.
MacDonald gets nothing, inci
dentally, from his appearances as
an expert witness in court cases.

In fact, these same seven marks
of comparison can provide positive
identification of a man you've
never seen, MacDonald says.
