Smith, Oregon's First Lady, will entertain on
Thursday afternoon next, April 26.
The party will be in the Marion hotel Gold room
between 2:30 and 5:30 o'clock.
All friends are invited to call during those
hours. No formal invitations have been issued, the
tea arranged as an informal gathering for Salem
women to meet the governor's wife.

Governor and Mrs. Elmo Smith will be out of
the capital for a number ofngagemcnls elsewhere
this next week.
On Monday they will be in southwestern Oregon,
attending the luncheon of the Oregon Coast High
way association at Coos Bay. Governor Smith lo be
speaker; and in the evening at a Chamber of Com
merce event in North Bend.
On Friday evening, Governor and Mrs. Smith
will be in Portland for the opening of the baseball
season there. On Saturday, the Smiths will be at
the Young Republicans gathering at Dorchester
House at Occanslde; and on April 30 are slated to
be in Rend to attend the Police Officers group
banquet in the Pilot Butte inn, Governor Smith to
be the speaker.
Chapter BC of P.E.O. Sisterhood will meet Tues
day evening at 7:30 o'clock at the home of Mrs.
Kinley Adams with Mrs. D, A. Emerson as co
hostess. Members of Mrs. C. W. Parker's bridge club
are honoring her Monday at a no-host luncheon
gathering at I.ipman's, the group later going to the
home of Mrs. L. C. Mcl.eod. In early May, Mr, and
Mrs. Parker leave for an extended stay in Califor
nia. Chapter CB of P.E.O. Sisterhood is meeting at
the home of Mrs. John M. Greenwood In Dallas
next Thursday night at 7:30 o'clock. Mrs. Irene
Adams will be co-hostess. Miss Mildred Dcisehcr is
in charge of the program on "Blueprint for Build
ing." Leaving tomorrow for Spokane lo attend a joint
meeting of the Washington and Oregon Hotel as

Founders Event
Salem alumnae of Pi Beta Phi sorority will
gather for a semi-formal banquet next Thursday
night at China City, the event marking the 89th
anniversary of founding of the organization. The
dinner will be at 6:30 o'clock.
Mrs. James T. Brand is to be speaker. Music
will be presented by Mrs. James Todd and mem
bers of the active chapter at Willamette univer
sity. Mrs. Peter M. Gunnar is to be toastmistrcss
and Mrs. Ralph Keyser, president of the alumnae,
will give a welcome.
Mrs. Walter Foster is chairman and on the hos

PRIL meeting and coffee for Willamette
Valley Panhellenic, the Salem alumnae
croup, will be next Friday morning at the
home of Mrs. Stanley C. Rolfness with Mrs. Jack
Haller assisting.
Plans will be outlined tor the annual "koffe
Match" to be given in May. The event is tentatively
set for May 26, and will be given at the home of
Mrs. G. Herbert Smith on Fairmount Hill.
Dabblers club will meet at the home of Mrs.
George Grcgor, 2610 Pioneer drive, Thursday at 8
p.m. New officers will be elected and L. E. Show

for annual Junior-Senior Proms in the three local
high schools, these affairs being among the big
social events of the year. . . .Sacred Heart aca

are setting up all arrangements and plans for an

The unusually beautiful decorations and the col
orful array of spring costumes and bonnets worn
'ty the guests all made the setting for Salem Me
morial Hospital auxiliary's silver tea, Thursday,
like a lush garden scene. ...The successful benefit,
of which Mrs. John H. Johnson was chairman, was
given at the charming Candalaria Heights home of
Dr. anil Mrs. George R. Hoffman, a large group
calling between 2:30 and 5:30 o'clock. ...Receiving
with the hostess were Mrs. Charles H. Hcllzcl,
president of the auxiliary, and Mrs. Adam Lefor,
superintendent at the hospital. . . .
A large basket of pale yellow blooms with
fluffy white and yellow tulle and satin ribbon ar
ranged among them hung on the lamp post at the
turn-in from the street to the home to greet guests
as they arrived ... At one side of the mantel in the
living room was a huge arrangement of magnolia
blooms . . . Floating camellias and nosegays of
bright flowers were arranged here and there about
the home . . . The tea table was especially beautiful
. . . .A yellow organdy cloth covered it. . . .For the
centerpiece there was a tiered silver epcrgne on a
silver rooted mirror. . . .At the base were small
pale yellow and white pansics and primroses,
larger ones in the center tier, then full-bloom tulips
and daffodils in yellow and white gracefully
spreading out at the top. . . .At cither side of the
centerpiece was a hurricane lamp with a white
candle burning. . . .
