she was bumped by a car driven

injuries, and she was in good con
dition at Salem General hospital

car and stopped it, he said, and
found Tours as the driver and
only occupant.
Tours was later arrested on
complaint signed by Woods and
posted bail on the charge pending
trial.
No sentence was levied after
the completion of the trial Wed
nesday morning. The trial started
Tuesday morning and was con
tinued again Wednesday when
there was not time to complete

It was indicated Wednesday
that Tours may make a motion
for retrial or a motion for dis
missal notwithstanding the verdict.

Dies of Stroke
Mrs. Mary Paterson Smith, Sa
lem area resident since 1897, died
Wednesday morning at -a local
nursing home. She suffered a
stroke Monday and Tuesday morn
ing and was taken to the nursing
home.
Mrs. Smith was born In Wiscon
sin June 8, 1864, and in 1882 in
Iowa was married to Charles
Smith, who died in 1929. The
Smiths moved to Salem from Iowa
and on moving here farmed in the
Brush College community. They
moved into Salem from Brush Col
lege in 1928. Mrs. Smith was a
member of the Seventh Day Ad
ventist church.
Survivors Include a daughter,
Mrs. W. M. (Janet) McMorris of
Salem: six sons, Charles Asa
Smith, George Elmer Smith, Ar
nel J. Smith and Clifford L. Smith,
all of Salem, William K. Smith of
Eugene and Harvey C. Smith of
Spokane; 17 grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
The time of the funeral services
will be announced later by the
Clough-Barrick chapel. Interment
will be in the ena cemetery.

Leslie E. Brises. who for sev
eral years was with the mfinlen-:

University, died at his home at 1250
North Winter street Tuesday.
Briggs, who retired three years
ago, had been in ill health for the
past five years. He was born at
Hlockton, Iowa, April 25, 1885. An
Oregon resident for the past 10
years, Briggs came to this stale
from California and had moved
there from Missouri. On coming to
Oregon he resided at Grants Pass
for six months and then moved to
Salem.
Briggs was a member of the Free
Methodist church.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Eva Marie Vlery, to whom he was
married at San Barnardino, Calif.,
June 12, 1944; two sons, Leslie J.
Briggs of Denver, Colo., and Law
rence R. Briggs of Whittier, Calif.:
a sister, Mrs. J- R. Kanan of
Galesburg, 111., and two grand
children. Announcement of funeral serv
ices will be made later by the
Howell-Edwards chapel.

of robbery may be signed here in
addition to the Eugene complaint
and the stolen car complaint.
Mrs. Nixon suffered a wrenched
shoulder and minor cuts and bruis
es in the attack, Salem officers
said. Her loss included the purse,
about 51.80 in cash and an inv
migration card, they said.
