bar and died. Greenwade ap
parently also shot a third time
but it was not known If while in
side or outside the tavern.
While all this was taking place,
Mrs. Wilson was still on the
phone, giving an account to po
lice. Officers at district head
quarters in Salem heard the shots
that wounded their fellow officer
and killed his assailant. One of
ficer who rushed to the scene
was Wallace Mckkcrs, brother to
the injured man, who was on
patrol in an adjoining police district.
Alter the shooting, Greenwade
told officers, "I knew I had to
shoot him ve he'd kill me." He
is an experienced rifleman as a
memher of the Dallas National
Guard company.

Patrons remembered his warning
that "someone is going to die
here" if his victims did not obey
his orders.
Kennan was taken to the Polk
county jail where he is being held
pending filing of specific charge.
District Attorney Walter Foster
said Kennan would be charged
with armed robbery, assault with
intent to kill or both. He could
be charged with one count of
armed robbery for each patron
and employe in the tavern, Fos
ter noted.
