Santiam Route
The Marion county court has
been presented with an agre
ment covering that portion of the
Santiam highway extending from
Stout creek near Mehama to the
Mission street entrance into Sa
lem. The agreement was pre
pared by the state highway de
partment and takes care of the
county roads that are crossed by
the highway.
The state highway commission
Is expected to let contracts for
the Stout Creek-Mission street
section of the highway in the not
distant future, although no an
nouncement has been made -in
this connection. The new route
will involve virtually all new con
struction. It parallels thre pres
ent road on the north for a dis
tance west of Stout creek in the
direction of Stayton, then veers
off over a northwesterly course
crossing the StaytonSublimity
road, north of Stayton. The im
provement involves 23.9 of con
struction. The section of'the Santiam
highway between Lancaster and
Airport roads has been complet
ed, but barricades had not been
removed early Thursday. How
ever, some motorists have been
using the route. The entire proj
ect is part of the Federal Aid
Secondary road system, involving
the U.S. government, the state
and the county. The county is
not called upon to assist in the
financing.
When the 23.9 miles have been
completed the Santiam highway
will have been improved all the
way from Mission street to Bend.
By 1965 it is expected there
will be about eight million men
between the ages 20-25 in the
United States.
