Manager Leo Durocher may
have diagnosed the whole National
League pennant race when he ex
plained why he benched Willie
Mays, the darling of the New
York Giants a year ago.
"Confused," Is the way Leo
pegged Willie's trouble. And if
that doesn't describe the way the
National League is behaving, it'll
do until something better comes
along.
This was Supposed to be one of
those "dream" races, with every
body setting into the act. Trouble

Is, the Brooklyn Dodge rocketed
away out front and have shown
no signs of faltering while the
other seven clubs grope around
looking for a way out.
It is a pretty dandy race at
that, if you exclude the Dodgers
who are 11 games out front with
a 46-16 record. The second-place
Cubs ore just 2'4 games up on
Milwaukee. The Gianls are an
other two games hack and two
games ahead of fifth place Cin
cinnati. Philadelphia and St. Louis
arc a virtual tie for sixth another
game back. Only Pittsburgh, 25
games behind the Dodgers, is
solidly in the cellar.
Milwaukee moved up on the
Cubs as Gene Conley won his ninth
decision last night, 2-1 over Pitts
burgh. Cincinnati, meanwhile,
made It five straight defeats for
the Mays-less Giants 5-3, and St.

St. Louis was earned. It came in

DiPietro Gets
Coast Batting
Lead on .369

SAN FRANCISCO ui An ane
mic .217 batting average tor me
week has, surprisingly, boosted
San Francisco's Bob DiPietro into
the top spot among Pacific Coast
League batters.
DiPietro s season average of 3C9
was 10 points better than the cur
rent mark of last week s leader,
Portland's Dick Whitman, who
dropped to second at .359. On the
third rung were hart Itapp ot San
Diceo and George (Catfish) Met-
kovich of Oakland with .347 apiece.
The rapid rise cl young DiPietro
actually was accomplished on a
dizzy skid. A week ago he was hit
ting at a .391 clip, but nadn t ac
cumulated enough times at bat to
figure in statistician William
Weiss' calculations. This week, al
though he connnecled wilh only
five base hits, his 23 times at hat
were enough to push him pver the
hump.
Rapp and Milt Smith, also, of
San Diego, remained in full control
of other bailing departments. Rapp
paced the league in home runs
with 19 and runs batted in with 86,
while Smith's 104 hits topped the
circuit. He is the only man over
the 100 mark for the year.

The spotlight shifts to women s

the Wimbledon tennis champion

Miss Hart, the plucky U.S. sin

is top-seeded and heavily favored
for the women's singles crown.
Maureen (Little Mo) Connolly of1
San Diego. Calif., champion for the!
last three years, married recently1
and retired from tennis.
Trabert and Seixas are frankly
regarded as the best amateur dou

servers are wondering if their re
cent surprise defeat by an obscure
Italian team in a minor tourna
ment means they are off form.
Miss Hart, who drew a bye in
the first round of women's singles,
was slated to open the day's activ
ity on the center court with a sec

Nelly Hopman, wife of the dour
but successful non-playing captain
of the Australian Davis Cup team.
