Fire Department Will
Burn Houses for Drill
The Salem Kire Department is
looking tor houses to burn.
No No! They're not antm; you
lo burn down your own home. They

Fire Marshall Glenn Shedcck said,
is one or more old houses that the
owners are planning on demolish
ing and arc willing to let the fire
department do the job by burning
the buildings down.

Morse Will Address
Luncheon April 30
The public is invited to attend
the $2-a-plate luncheon at which
Oregon's Senator Wayne Morse
will speak, April 30 at 12:15 p.m.
in the Marion Hotel Gold Room,
S. V. Horn, chairman of the Mar
ion County Democratic Central
Committee, announced today.
The central committee is spon
soring the affair, and tickets for
the luncheon will he available
from committee members and at
5n Court street.
Tom Knrifiht, chairman of the
Marion-P o 1 k Democratic Club,
has been named general chairman
for the luncheon by Horn. Ver
non Grove is in charge of ticket
sales.
Members of the arrangements
committee include Jason Lee,
Steve Anderson, Charles Skinner,
Huey Frederick, Glen Sorcnson,
and Mrs. S. W. Horn.
The purpose of the planned burn
ing of such a hou.se or building is
for practice drills in extinguishing
fires and rescue work for fire de
partment members. The depart
ment would set small blazes in the
building and then practice various
methods of extinguishing them.
When the building is burned down,
the department will clear afray the
debris for the owner, he said.
A second use of such a building
may he as part of a nation-wide
Civil Defense trial Operation
Alert, 1955 on June 15 and 16.
Marion County CD Director W. S.
Wharton said the building might
be used in a test problem of rescu
ing "injured" persons from a col
lapsed or demolished building.
Kescue teams from Salem, Leb
anon, Eugene, Portland, Forest
Grove and The Dallas will partici
pate in such a rescue problem here
on June 15, he said.
Such a house i.ecd not be in the
city limits, Shedcck said, but should
be within a reasonable distance as
the fire equipment will have to be
available for immediate duty in
case of fire. The house should be
clear of other buildings for at least
100 feet.

ke at the fire department office in
the city hall.
Initiation ceremonies for a j
group of candidates is set for the
meeting of Oak Rebekah lodge
Tunsday evening, April 26. Sev
eral neighboring Rebekah lodges
have been invited for the meet-,
ing.
