Timberlands
Reclassified
ALBANY Reclassification of
7,000 acres of cutover timber
lands in Linn county for reas
sessment under the reforestation
act was reported Friday by Coun
ty Assessor John Sheppard, fol
lowing a hearing conducted here
by the U.S. forest service.
The assessor explained that the
reclassified land will be taken
from the assessment rolls so far
as tax purposes are concerned,
and owners will pay 5 cents an
acre per year in lieu of ad val
orem taxes. Such lands, however,
are subject to a 12Vj per cent
yield tax if and when their new
crop of timber is harvested, some
50 to 75 years hence.
Much of the reclassified area is
owned by the Willamette Valley
Lumber Company, the assessor
said, with holdings owned by the
Weyerhauser Timber Co., Louis
G. Hill and M and M Woodwork
ing Co. also included.
