They Agree About Corn

praise last month. He acclaimed
American farmers' methods ol

peasants to emulate them.
Russell heads the agronomy de
partment ot the University ol Illi
nois, a state which alone produces
more tl.an three times as much
corn as all the Soviet Union. He
told a gathering of soil specialists
in Chicago Thursday that Mid
western corn yields could average
85 bushels an acre, instead of the
present 50, if farmers used im
proved toil management practices
and got good growing weather.
Yes sir, corn is popping up a lot
in the news lately. In Latin Amer
ica, for example, where the silky
ear is a staple of the human diet.
You heard that Salvadoreans
want only white corn for their
tortillas? No yellow, red, black or
spotted. That was brought out in

It seems the people's preference
for while cornmeal for their thin
flat cakes is slowing a U.S.-Salva-dorean
agricultural school program
to increase corn production. But
the yield, once less than 10 bushels
to the acre, is now up to about 17.
There's a corn problem too in
Guatemala, which threw out a
Communist-supported government
last June. The cost of living has
been sky-highbecn sky-high there
this winter and a big shortage of
corn is predicted.
Incidentally, the Guatemalans
don't wrap their tamales in corn
shucks, as do the Mexicans. They
use banana leaves.
Cornbrcad and corn-on the-cob
lovers notwithstanding, most of
the three billion-odd bushels of
corn grown annually in the Uni
ted States is fed to livestock.
Likewise in Russia, though
cornbread gets a big hand in
Soviet Georgia, Stalin's native
state, and you can - now buy
quick-frozen corn-on-the-cob in
Moscow.
The line of distinction between
sweet and field corn is not fine
ly drawn in Russia, where the
land devoted to the American
import amounts to only. 3.3 per
cent of the total grain crop acre
age. What is the big crop. The
8,800,000 acres the Russians
planted to corn last year rpo
duced a total of ISO million bush
els. That about ties El Salva
dor's 17-bushelsto-the-acre av
erage. A short growing season
throughout the north is one of
the reasons for the Soviet lag.
Ask Americans who have tried to
grow corn in Moscow gardens. A
map will show why.
Moscow lies at the latitude of
Hudson Bay's Belcher Island
1600 miles north of the United
Slates frontier. And even in
northern parts of the United
States, early frost sometimes
strikes corn before it is matured.
But Khrushchev wants a try any
way at increasing Russia's corn
acreage eight times by I960.
"In fodder our performance is
much below that of the United
Slates," he said. ". . . We also do
fertilize our lands sufficiently. In
this we are below the standards of
many capitalist countries."
Khrushchev also noted that
American corn production boomed
alter World War II through the
widening use of hybrid seed.
There's a lot of work in produc
ing such seed. The average fanner
has neither the layout nor the
time for the intricale planting and
detasseling operations required in
the mating of the separate varie
ties. He pays a premium price for
the crossbred seed, but it lives
him higher yields.

vidual Circles.
Parochial School
Will Open Monday 1
STAYTON Monday will be the
first session for pupils of St. Mary's
parochial school In the newly erect
ed building, with moving taking
place over the weekend.
When the contract was awarded
in August to James Hickey on his
bid of $150,000, it was stated the
board hoped to have the building
ready for occupancy by next June.
However it has been readied well
ahead of that schedule. Louis
Schmerger of Salem was the archi
tect. ,
Dedication of the new building
will be held at a later date, it was
learned this week.
Since the kitchen is not yet ready
for the serving of the hot lunch
program, that part will be delayed,
perhaps until next fall, but it is
hoped it may be sooner. There
is a Urge all-purpose room that
will fill a longtime need of the par
ish for a modern assembly hall.
All classes will occupy the new
building except the first, which will
continue lo be accommodated in
the old building.
THROW ROCKS AT TEACHER
OKLAHOMA CITY l-An Okla
homa City Junior High School
teacher, Earl E. Stewart, 45, told
police a group of students drove
past his home and hurled rocks.
"It has happened before," he said.
"Every time I give certain stu
dents low grades someone throws
rocks at my house' He said that
if he could identify any of the
rock throwers he would take cart
of the situation. ,
