Consolidation of Spring Valley school district with Salem
schools became effective November 26, and Spring Valley
schoolhousc, vacant of clascs for more than two years, will
be sold at a public sale in Dallas, January 7, 1955. The school
housc was built in 1907. Spring Valley postofice was estab
lished March 5, 1852 with Sanford Watson as postmaster. It
was discontinued Sept. 1, 1855.

No Fiction in This, But
It's an Interesting Book

Is about to add another volume to
his ever increasing library.
And the new work will not deal
with fairy talcs, Christmas stones
or something equally light in na
ture. It will bo the 8th volume of
the record of judgments books
that reflect much of the economic
history of the county, particularly
dealing with the 'litl!e fellow"
who couldn't quite manage to keep
even and eventually gut caught
up in the toils of the law.
While the books are "puhlir prop
erty" and what is written therein
can be viewed by anybody who
wants to satisfy his curiosity, it
doesn't seem just right, particular
ly at Christmas time, to name
names. However, it may be said
that the first entry written in
Vol. No. 1, occurred in May, 1H."4.
A date that caused Arthur Booth
lin. deputy clerk, to remark:
"Heavens, they vwn went in debt
loo years pgo."
By way of explanation, it should
be pointed out that whenever an
individual or firm secures a judg
ment against another, whether it
be through action of the circuit
court or whether it comes in by
transcript from district court or
justices of the peace, the actum
is written in long hand in the
book.
Scattered throughout the pages
of the huge volume are notations
in red ink. This color fluid is
commonly known as representing
loss. However in these instances
it is used to indicate that the debt
or has taken care of the obligation
in full.
"And what a lot of tc;irs. heart
aches, trials and trihulations are
represented in those lines," volun
teered Clerk Mattson.
It takes less time to fill the
books, that is ! the matter of
days, months ) years. For in
pleaded guilty to seducing secrets
out of two U.S. intelligence officers
for Russian pay.
The names of the two Americans
were not introduced in court. U.S.
officials said previously the black
eyed charmer Irmgard Mar-
garethc Schmidt was the mis
tress of an Air Force intelligence
colonel and had occasional dates
with a civilian intelligence chief.
The prosecution desenbed her as
one of the most dangerous spies
encountered here since World War
II.
The 24-year-old former East ?one
student burst into tears as U.S.
High Commission Judge Ambrose
Fuller pronounced sentence. At'
though -she had said nothing in
her own defense during the trial,
she sobbed bitterly:
"I can't take It. It's too much."
The girl pleaded guilty to trans
mitting to the Russians for money
details of the order of battle for
Allied defense of West Berlin. She
also admitted a second charge of
approaching a German national in
U.S. intelligence to gel more in
formation.
She pleaded innocent to a third
charge of attempting to obtain
details' of the entire network of
American agents in West Berlin.

Election Set
Vote Records
WASHINGTON W Two new
total vote records were set in the
1954 congressional elections which
saw the Democrats roll up a 2,-18,",327-vote
margin over the Re
publicans in the aggregate ballot
for the U. S. House.
Cl(y races for senator, gover
nor and representative were count
ed by the dozen in the Nov. 2 bal
loting. Filial official figures tabulated
by the Associated Press showed
that Republicans outvoted the
Democrats in the House vote out
side the normally Democratic
Smith by 164,6116. This was a sharp
drop from the GOP margin of
1.610.000 in the same 37 states in
the last mid term election in 1950
The Democratic national edge of
2.1115,327 compared with their plur
ality ol only 248,000 lour years
ago.
The total vote cost in the nation
was 44,417,4, a gain of 1,985,414
or 4.7 per cent. The aggregate bal
lot for House candidates was 42,'
577,(1111). an increase of 2,225,774 or
5.5 per cent. The former highs
were recorded In 19.i0.
Construction Delays
On New Highways
Motorists may meet with minor
delay from Big Eddy four miles
east of The Dalles to Rufus be
cause of construction, the State
Highway Department said today.
Brief delays may also be ex
pected on the Willamette high
way 7 miles east of Oakridge:
The Dallos-Oalifnrnia highway 12
miles north of Klamath Falls;
the Pacific highway from Myrtle
Creek four miles north: the Ore
gon Coast highway 2 to 14 miles
south of Port Orford, and the
Umpqua highway from Reds
port to 1.36 miles cast.

J. Hilton, Famed Author,
Dies After Long Illness
LONG BEACH, Calif. (-James
Hilton, screenwriter and novelist
who wrote sucn books as "Good
bye Mr. Chips' 'and "Lost Hori
zon," died last night in Seaside
Hospital after a long illness. He
was 54.

Neuberger for
Alaska Airline

Richard L. Neuberger Tuesday
made public a letter he wrote Sat
urday to President Eisenhower
asking that the President set aside
any order of the Civil Aeronautics
Board that would halt service be
tween Alaska and the States by
Pacific Northern and Alaska Air
lines. Neuberger said such an order,
I if issued, would be "disastrously
IsLrious to the Northwest and to
Alaska generally."
He said his letter was based on
icport that the CAB had voted
such a step. If so, Neuberger
wrote, it would exclude the Port
land area from direct trade with
Alaska, restore Seattle to its "for
mer monopolistic position regard
ing Alaskan commerce by air,"

Ainerican and Northwest Airlines,
put Alaska at the mercy of trans
portation monopolies and give pref
erence in Alaskan service to non-
Alaskan companies.
If the CAB has made or makes
such a ruling, Neuberger asked
the President to set it aside.
Highway Contract

The State Highway Depart
ment said today it has awarded
a Lane county grading and pav
ing contract to Warren North
west, Inc., or Portland on low
bid of $340,268.
The job involves 3.73 miles of
grading, 4.25 miles of roadbed
reshaping and 7.99 miles of pav
ing, plus furnishing 3000 cubic
yards of crushed material
stockpile on the Crow-Gillespie
corner section of the territorial
highway about 14 miles west of
Eugene. There were 10 higher
bids.

He had been near death for sev
eral days.
Hilton, born Sept. 9, 1901), in
Leigh, Lancashire, England, had
said it was Hollywood which
brought him to America, although
he said he couldn't find America
in Hollywood.
"I live in Long Beach because
it puts me closer to the feel of
America," he once said. "You
can't get the feel of it from Holly
wood.
It was the mystical lost land of
Shangri-la, a valley of beauty,
serenity and eternal youth, which
started Hilton on years of restless
wanderings between Lngland and
the United States.
Shangri-la was a distant, misty
Utopia in Hilton's most famous
novel, "Lost Horizon." The 1934
best-seller and the 1935 movie ver
sion, which Hilton came here to
help film, had made the word fa
mous the world over.
Hilton's search for his own
peace and quiet brought him from
England to Hollywood three times
and continued through two unsuc
cessful marriages.
The same years produced a flow
of best sellers which found an easy
market in Hollywood.
In 1934, when Ronald Olman
appeared in a dramatization of
'Lost Horizon, Robert Donat and
Marlene Dietrich co-starred in a
version of his 1933 novel, "Knight
Without Armor."
Later Colman appeared in his
1941 "Random Harvest and Do
nat won an Oscar for the film
version of "Goodbye Mr. Chips"
made six years after Hilton wrote
it on two weeks notice as a
magazine story for a Christmas
supplement.
After his 1935 trip to Hollywood
he returned in 1937, tne year he
and his first wife Alice Brown Hil
ton were divorced. That same
year he and the former Galina
Kopineck were married .Their di
vorce came in 1945.
Hilton took over the House he
bought for his father who pre
ferred to return to England and
lived a quiet and secluded life in
the handsome home near the sea.
An attorney handled all business
matters, a secretary took care of
his correspondence, and Hilton
worked in his garden and wrote.

Knife Wielder
BALTIMORE UP) Wielding a
chair lion-tamer style, James Cole
yesterday tamed a knife-brandish-ing,
impatient customer out the
door of his shoeshine parlor,
down the street and all the way
to a police station.
Police said they were told the
trouble started when Charles Car
ter, 44, waiting for a shoeshine in
Cole's establishment, complained
about the slow service. To em
phasize his dissatisfaction, he
whipped out a large hunting knife
and waved it around.
Cole grabbed a chair and then
went to work, feinting and weav
ing toward Carter. South on
SIcDnnough street they went, east
on Ashland and up the steps
and through the door of the
Northeastern police station.
Carter was charged with assault
and carrying a deadly weapon and
sentenced to 60 days in jail.
