Veterans Order
Seeks Pensions
The national convention of Vet
erans of World War I held recent
ly in Buffalo, N.Y., voted to have
a bill for pensions of $100 a
month for all veterans of this
war presented at the coming ses
sion of congress, Frank Young,
commander of Salem Barracks,
reported after returning from it.
The bill will prove that the pen
sion reverts on death to the
widow, and for free hospitaliza
tion without signing the so-called
"pauper's oath," pensions for
present widows of deceased vet
erans and other benefits similar
to those already granted by con
gress to veterans of other wars.
Young reported that Salem
Barracks has a membership of
412 with a goal of 500 by July 1,
1955. It is the largest barracks
in the state and nation and has
a Targe women's auxiliary.
The orgnization will hold a no
host dinner at the V.F.W. hall,
630 Hood street, Wednesday, De
cember 22 at 6.30 p.m. followed
by folk dancing, carols and later
- by dancing for members and
friends. All veterans of the Wil
lamette valley are welcome
whether members or not, Young
said.

school to the Capital Journal

The pieces are made from the
foliage of native trees and are

annual gift to the newspapers.

The Chrysler president made his
observations in a year-end state
ment. In it, he said:
"Before Chrysler Corp's 1955

we hit that target we would raise
our sights still higher. On the basis
of the initial response of the public
to our new models I now think we
will raise our sights sooner than I
anticipated. "

Mrs. Harriet Salvage
ALBANY Mrs. Harriet Emma
Salvage, 80, died at the home of
her daughter, Mrs. May Haley,
1340 W. 15th Ave., Monday. The
funeral will be held at the Fort-miller-Fredericksen
chapel, Wed
nesday at 2 p.m., with burial tak
ing place in the Riverside ceme
tery. A resident of Albany since
1916. Mrs. Salvage was born
at Cook county, Neb., November
1874. She was married to
James T. Salvage at Addy, Wash.,
on April 30, 1894. He died in
1931. Surviving arc three daugn-
ters, Mrs. Paul Miller, Corvallis;
Mrs. Haley and Mrs. Eva Krell of
Days Creek, Ore.; five sons, Ralph
U.. Toledo: Ross ., BrooKings;
Fred and Howard E. and Herbert
J. Salvage of Cave Junction.
Raymond H. Potter
DALLAS Funeral services for
Ravmond Herbert Potter, 43, will
be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from
the Bollman Funeral chapel here
with the Rev. Delbert Dowell of
ficiating.
Mr. Potter, a resident of Kings
Valley, died Monday. He was
born at Hardington, Neb., March
3, 1911 and came to Oregon in
1938.
He married the former Lillie
May Girrard, who survives, at
Corvallis June 18, 1943. Mr. Pot
ter had been a resident of Dallas
for the past 11 years.

members of the Oregon Legisla
ture and their wives during the
coming session and turned ar
rangements over to the special
events committee of the organi
zation. The meeting was held
Wednesday morning in the Hotel
Senator.
Also decided was to set up a
roads and highway committee.
President Elton Thompson pre
sided.
Worthless Checks
Passed for $125
Five worthless checks with a
total purported value of about
$125 were passed in Salem dur
ing the past month.
The checks are thought to be
the work of persons who have
passed an estimated $1,500 in
similar checks in the Northwest
recently.
The checks were imitations of
legitimate payroll check of a
business located at Taft. All of
the checks passed here bore the
date of November 26.

berger, 71, who had been a super
visor for the Spaulding Pulp and
Paper Co. in Newberg, died Sun
day at the Dallas hospital.
Mr. Effenberger was born
on January 7, 1883 in Ne
braska and lived in Astoria and
Portland before coming to Dallas
in 1933.
He was a member of the Luth
eran church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Buena Effenberger; a daughter,
Mrs. Jeanne Heater, Drain; three
brothers, William Effenberger,
Dallas and Otto and Alie Effen
berger, both of Tillamook; three
sisters, Mrs. Emma Meele, Van.
