Tom and the Mars King climbed
into the tiny space shop. There
was scarcely room for the two of
them to sit with their knees
hunched up and their arms hug
ging their sides.
Tom was too excited to care
about his uncomfortable position.
As for the King, he felt that rid
ing in a space ship was much
more comfortable than whirling
through the sky as a flying saucer.
He still wore his space suit and
said he would never take it off.
Santa showed them how to oper
ate the ship. Then he slammed the
door. Tom and Majesty looked out
through tiny windows and waved
to all the Santa Land folks.
"Goodbye! Come back soon!"
shouted the little people.
Then Tom pressed a button and
the space ship loomed into the
air. In an instant they were far
above Santa Land. Tom peered
out the window. He could see the
whole Atlantic ocean. It looked
like a small lake. Next to it was
America and on the far side of
America was the Pacific ocean.
He could see it all quite plainly.
Then he was too far away to see
clearly and the whole world was
just a ball spinning below him.
Presently they approached an
other ball. It was orange and had
eyes and mouth like a man. At
first Tom was irigmenea to ee
such a face in the sky. But sud
denly he knew it was only the
moon. r v
On end on thev went. They
passed many stars glittering in
the skies. Before long mey ap
proached Mars itself.
Look!" cried Tom. "we are
going to land!"
Sure enough, tne snip guaea
gently to the surface of the planet
and came to a stop, torn pressea
a button and the door of the ship
flew open.
Tom stepped out lnio a lano
stranger than any he ever dreamed
of.
There was neither tree nor bush
nor flower. No grass. Not even
a weed. Running through the bar-
rent around were streaks of yel
low. Tom dropped to his knees
and ran his fingers along a yel
low streak. When he looked up his
eyes were wide with .wonder.
'Gold! ne wnisperea. us goiu
dust!"
The Mars King nodded sadly.
"That's the worst part of our plan
et. Wherever we look we find that
awful sold dirt."
"But," cried Tom, "you are rich
bevond compare! Gold is money
"Money? There is no such thing
on Mars. What we would like is
grass and trees and daisies. We
hnvA no need for sold!"
Tom looked around and saw that
in truth it was a drab end lone
some land. To make matters worse
it was neither dark nor light but
a sort of perpetual gloom halfway
between night and day.
"If nothing grows here how do
you get food to eat'' asxeo torn.
"We make our food out of chem
icals." said Majesty. "We pack
vitamins and minerals and other
things into capsules and that is
what we eat.
"Goodness, it must be pretty
horine." said Tom.
Majesty nodded. "I suppose it
is. But we have never had any
other way of eating and this seems
eood enough to us.
"It is very strange," said Tom
suddenly.
"What is so strange?"
"Well, you people have invented
such remarkable things line turn

packing meals into capsules. Yet
you never invented any toys
Doesn't that seem strange to you?"
The King nodded. "Yes, it is
surprising. But perhaps it's be
cause we have never had a Sanla
Claus on Mars." He took Tom s
hand.
"Come now I will show you the
kings' palaces. They lie just be
yond the golden hill."

Employees Plan Party
SWEET HOME Among the
social events of the season will
be a dinner in the Fire Hall re
creation rooms for the employees
of the City of Sweet Home. The
dinner will be held Wednesday,
Dec. 22, and preparing the din
ner will Fireman Bill Reed who
will be assisted by Mrs. Reed.
The employees and their hus
bands and wives plan their an
nual celebration around the
Christmas tree and will feature
speeches from the several de
partment heads,
mann. and the cast will include
such stars as Fredric March in the
role of Scrooge, Basil Ralhbone as
Marley's ghost, and Ray Middleton
in two roles, those of Scrooge's
nephew and the spirit of Christmas
present.
On Christmas Eve CBS-TV will
broadcast services from Washing
ton National Cathedral in the na
tion's capital, beginning at 11:30
p.m. The next day CBS will bring
a Christinas morning service from
the chepel in Boys' Town, Neb.,
beginning at 12:30 p.m.
NBC-TV will put the Christmas
Eve service in St. Patrick's Cathe
dral, New York City, on the air at
midnight Friday.

30-ton gantry crane for use at

Monorail Co. of San Francisco was
second at $133,627.
Kuchel had requested a review
of the bidding after receipt of a

not compete with foreign countries

it does make an off-beat gesture
occasionally, and one of them
seems worthy of comment.
For example, who but the TV
people would dream of casting so
bloodstained a tragedienne as Ju
dith Anderson, famed for her fiery
Medea and scheming Lady Mac
beth, as a reader of fairy tales for
the Christmas moppet audience?
That is going to happen at 5 p.m.
Christmas Day during the sixth an
nual "Christmas Hour of Story and
Song" program on the CBS net
work.
The star, who was last seen on
TV handing daggers to Macbeth
(Maurice Evans) and urging him
to have at the king, is going to read
