Gel Nobel Prize

paper Kxpressen as the likely win
ner of the 194 Nobel Price ir
medicine and physiology, to be
awarded Thursday night.
The Kxpressen jaid there was
possibility, however, the pr i i m
would be given to three Boston
doctors lor polio research.
There were strong indications

tive of Chicago, would receive the
Nobel Prize for research on two
hormones produced by the poster
ior lobe of the pituituary gland, it
said.
The three Boston polio experts
were identified as Dr. John F.
Knders, Dr. Thomas Weller and
Dr. Frederick Kobbins.
The Nobel Prizes, which
amounted to $35,067 each last
year, are awarded from a fund
established by the will of Alfred
Nobel, the inventor of dynamite.
The prize in medicine and phys
iology was shared in 1953 by Dr.
Hans Adolph tirobs of Sheffield,
Kngland, and Dr. Fritz Albert
Lipmann of Cambridge, Mass., for
research on basic life processes
in human cells.
PUD Favored
For FPC Permit

Grant County Public Utility Dis
trict looked to the nation's cap
ital Thursday (or formal issuance
of a Federal Power Commission
permit to procede with prelimi
nary plans lor a multi-million dol
lar dam at Priest itapids on the
Columbia River.
Glenn Smothers, PUD manager,
aid the district, advised by Sen.
Masnuson (D-Wash) the FPC was
preparing fo issue a preliminary
permit, said the first step will be
a go ahead to a firm which recent
ly submitted the low bid for test
drilling at the site.
Masnuson, in his announcement
here Wednesday, said his office in
Washington reported the permit
would be issued to the PUD some
time Thursday.
The FPC decision reported by
Masnuson gives the PUD another
round In. its skirmish with the
Slate Power Commission over
which agency should be permitted
to build the dam.

SPOKANE - The Kaiser
Aluminum and Chemical Corp.
laid Wednesday work will be com
pleted this week on a 9 million
dollar system to "scrub" the
fumed that come from the eight
potlinea at its Mead Hcduction
plant.
Kaiser said six of the putlines
have been covered since last fall
and the control system will be
ready on the other two by Friday.
Farmers in the Mead and Oeen
hlult areas near the plant had
raised questions about ' possible
fume damage to agriculture.
Kaiser said the control system
draws smoke and fumes off each
electrolytic cell at th plant by air
suction. Ducts carry the smoke off
each aluminum pit to large water

combined club will be known
as Lucky Livestockers and will
be led by Harold Bressler and
R. L. Stafek. The officers are
president, Darel Stafek; vice
president, Larry Vogt; secretary,
Maxine Bressler; treasurer, Jean
Stone; news reporter, Vernon
Vogt; song leader, Jerry Stafek.
Other members are Jon Vogt,
Russell Durkie, and Mike Stone.
Meetings will be held the first
Wednesday of the month.

Fish Closure
Bill Attacked
PORTLAND (UP) The Oregon
State Fish Commission today re
affirmed its opposition to the in
itiative measure on the November
ballot which would close coastal
streams to commercial fishing.
John C. Vealch, chairman of the
commission, said enactment of ihe
measure by the voters "would
have a disastrous effect on the
conservation of the salmon runs in
the coast streams."
The commission blamed dimin
ished salmon runs less on com
mercial fishing than on destruction
of spawning grounds by logging
operations, removal of gravel from
streams, removal of timber from
watersheds, and silting of stream
beds in summer months.
Veatch pointed out that runs in
the Nestucca and Rogue rivers ,
which have been closed to com
mercial fishing for years, are con
stantly declining.
"This decline," he said, "has
not been due to over-fishing in the
rivers but partly to the destruction
of natural spawning grounds and
partly to fishing on the high seas."
He asserted that the proposed
measure would remedy neither of
those destructive causes.
About 90 per cent of U.S. imports
of dried, whole eggs come from
Sweden.
