I television audiences next fall will
Isee more strange backgrounds in
their whodunnits than ever before.
Moviemakers are busy in at
least half a dozen overseas "Hoi
lywoods" turning out the half-hour
film dramas that U.S. television
stations use up week after week
with an unflagging appetite. .
A Rome company is filming a
TV series of "The Three Muske-
Iteers" aimed at the American
market. A Sherlock Holmes series
is before the cameras in Paris.
I A studio in London just started
I filming 26 damatic half-hour films
for American audiences.

Film men returning here from
overseas say U.S. television has
become a major target for inter
national enterpreneurs who recog
nize a good chance to convert lo
cal labor and materials into Amer
ican dollars. Italian, French, Ger
man and British capital is backing
many of the ventures.
The TV film-fever is said to be
Ithe hottest in Paris, where they
have a saying "On fait un film
pilot!" or "Let's make a pilot

taken around to potential backers

One of the earliest producers to
cash in on the European filming
ground was Sheldon Reynolds,
whose "Foreign Intrigue" series
has been a hit in America. He
films it literally all over Europe,
and recently began production of
new bherlock Holmes series in
Paris. ' .
Some of the 30-minute dramas.
usually involving the same set of
characters, are filmed with bi-lin-
gual soundtracks so they can be
offered in the less lucrative Euro
pean TV market as a bonus.
Manuel Zocena. an ambitious
young Guatemalan, recently ar
rived in Hollywood with 13 half-
hour films in Spanish and English
produced in Mexico City. He is
trying to sell the Spanish versions
to TV sponsors in U.S. areas with
heavy Spanish speaking popula
tions, and nopes to market the
English versions around the whole
country.
Hollywood takes a dim view of
so much movie production busi.
ness being lost to foreign coun
tries, and so far has made only a
creeping start at doing the oppo
site, selling American-made TV
programs to foreign stations and
networks.

Seeks Judgeship
James B. Daniel, 38-year-old
World War II veteran with law
degrees from the University of
Denver and Duke university, has
announced his candidacy for the
position of Marion county circuit
judge. He would succeed Judge
Wallace Carson who recently an
nounced he would not be a candidate.
Daniels is an associate of the
Salem law firm of Moody and
Lamkin and before coming to
Salem taught at the University
of Denver and the University of
Oregon.
A resident of the Halls Ferry
district, Daniels has a wife and
two small children.

are being cast off from the cervix.
In such examinations, experts can
watch for signs of changes which
indicate the cells are cancerous.
