20 Blind Broommakers
Are on Sit-down Strike
By GIB STALEY
PITTSBURGH tW-Twenty men
slept fitfully in a brilliantly lighted
room last night men who "want
to work and don't want charity."
; The 20 are blind.
, They are- broom makers who
nave- lost their jobs and they're
on a sitdown strike.
The men took over the cafeteria
of the Pittsburgh branch of the
Pennsylvania Assn. for the Blind
yesterday afternoon. A few hours
later, when they showed no sign
of leaving, police were called.
Officers made no attempt to evict
the men. A detail watched as they
tried to sleep. Some of the men
lept awhile, then talked of their
next step. A few played cards
with a marked deck of course,
marked in Braille. '
A rail buckled by near-110-degree heat caused derailment of
29 cars of a Southern Railway 79-car train near Belleville,
111., July 18. The cars, from the center of the train, were
tossed on both sides of the track with assorted merchandise
spilled over the embankment Front and rear sections remained
upright but officials estimated it would take three days to
clear the right of way and repair tracks. No one was injured. ,

House Votes to Hike Vetsr Pay
WASHINGTON ffl - The House
voted unanimously Wednesday to
boost compensation payments to
war. veterans and some depend
ents of veterans who have service-connected
disabilities. .
The increases, approximately S
per cent for veterans and 25 per
cent for some dependents of de
ceased veterans, were provided in
a bill passed by roll call vote of
3994 and sent to the Senate.
The legislation provides for no
increases for veterans, or depend
ents, whose pension payments are
not based on service-connected dis
abilities. In a separate action and by an
identical 399-0 tally, the House
voted to extend for another year
the deadline for veterans of the
Korea fighting to start and com
plete their education under the GI
assistance act.
Korea veterans now must start
their GI educational training by
Aug. 20. or no more than two
years after discharge from the
service. And they must complete

This new Sunkist Orange weight-control
plan helps you hold down weight to an attractive,
healthful level and keep it there.
This is not a reducing plan as you know them.
It's far simpler and makes much better sense.
There is no dangerous dieting, no tiresome calorie
counting, no back-breaking exercises, no expen
sive pills or drugs.
You simply follow this rule:
Bat a Sunkist Orange 30 minutes before
lunch and dinner each day.
Then eat moderately at mealtime, as
you should. This becomes amazingly
easy because easing the fresh orange
with its healthful "meat" (rich in
cellulose) helps curb your appetite the
natural way and gives you new roou
time hunger control.
This new eat-an-orange plan is working for
others. Why not give it a fair trial, say for three
weeks? Take advantage of the big SUM-JAMB
orange sale at your market and start today.

The blind broom makers went
on strike last March 2, protesting
a pay cut. They have no union.
James Leri, 29, married and the
father of one child, said:
"We had been'paid $1.13 a dozen
to make brooms. The association
tried to cut us to 78 cents a dozen
and we walked off the job. But
a short time ago we offered to
go back to work for 90 cents a
dozen. -
"We decided to put or a sitdown
strike and went to the cafeteria
for a meeting yesterday. Some of
the association officials called po
lice and said we had to get out
by 5 p.m. Well, we're still here
and we are going to stay for
awhile. We might try ' to picket
the place later in the day. I don't

About 100 blind,, in addition to the

However, there isn't enough work
