Home Owners Urged to Buy
From Oregon Nurserymen
Recently we have had complaints
concerning and inquiries about,
some house tn house peddling of
landscaping plans and nursery
stock, usuplly on a order basis to
he shinned at "proper planting
time" with payment to be made
upon receipt, Investigation shows
these orcanisations arc out of
slate businesses with local sales
people. Far he it from us to criticize
any legitimate business enterprise,
but we cannot but issue a word of
warning to local house owners
against the possible "gyp ad or
bait," The situation in the mail
order nursery business has be
come so serious in recent years
that many gardening organizations
are taking action to warn their
members. Garden magazines, and
others, too, are advising of the
so-called "rackets" existing in the
gardening and nursery business.
Unfortunately, whenever any
type of business becomes very
active and successful, the unscrup
ulous ones enter the field, too. A
few years ago the American Asso
ciation of Nurserymen staged a
campaign called "Plant Amefica"
tn prevent so much sending abroad
for nursery stock, bulbs, etc. The
local nurserymen backed this pro
gram with their own campaign
"plant Oregon," a worthy idea
and one which should be continued
today. Nowhere but in our own
Pacific Northwest can you obtain
plants, shrubs, trees, etc., that
will perform ideally in your home
garden. First, because the plants,
etc., are acclimated to our soil
and weather conditions. Second;
plants grown in local nurseries are
if varieties suitable for local cul
ture. We have, personally, had some
experience with purchasing plants
from out of state with usually sad
exnerience! Too often the plants
were not shipped at the proper
planting time for our local condi
tions; were poorly packed; improp
erly dug or of a variety different
from that ordered. '

are all this way. Far from it, but
there have been so many instances
of misleading advertising, etc., that
it is our suggestion the home
gardener consult local nurserymen
first. It is a very well known
fart . that any local nurseryman
will be more than, glad to assist
you in the landscaping of your
home. Some nurserymen employ
oualified landscane artists just for
that purpose. Thus, there is no
risk of a haphazard plan prepared
by one who does not qualify as a
landscape artist, in all probability,
and. more particularly, the chance
that a plan would include some
plants and trees that might ac
tually, in time, prove to be obnoxious.
So. before being sold by a "ped
dler of landscaping plans and
nursery stock, learn something of
the firm with which you are do
ing business. An honest firm mU
supply its agents with credentials,
not just statements in a brochure,
but examples by photographs of
their work elsewhere. Dun & Brad

censes, permits, etc.
In the particular instance re
ferred to us was a case where the
landscaping plan called for no
evergreens and included some of
the commonest, and most inex
pensive of flowering shrubs, many
of which the home owner would dig
up and throw away a few years
later, as your own experience and
contact with others has shown.
So, our warning is not to be
"taken in" by the glib salesman
or the tantalizingly low price in a
newspaper or magazine advertise
ment. In other words, be sure of
what vou are buying, first, ana
then be sure from whom yoa are
buying; that there is a responsi
bility on the part of the dealer to
maintain your goodwill by giving
you quality mercnanaise si i"
and reasonable prices,

be the subject of a separate article
in the near future.

sprays, new chemicals for weed
control in other vegetable crops,
and vegetable insect control with
soil insecticides.
Visitors will sea new varieties
of beans, sweet cam. melons, to
matoes, rhubarb and beets. Crop
responses to combinations of plant
spacing and rates of fertilizing
and irrigation are on disolav.
Soil-packing to vegetable fields
through movement m equipment
has been duplicated in a Blue Lake 1
bean field to test the effect on
moisture penetration, and crop
production.

the newest and smoothest devel
opments in modern building tech
nique. Heretofore you took your
choice between plaster and dry
walls. Now you can have both
the speed and economy of dry
wall construction and a coat of
quick-drying (paint-it-the-n e x t-
day) plaster, thanks to. an inven
tion by Vito Busatti.
This new material Is a white
mortar dry-mix preparation which
can be applied as thin as l32nd
of an inch over gypsum wail-
board, plasterboard, rocklath, con
crete, cinder block. Brick, ciay,

The inventor recently won ap
proval of his new plaster from
the New York Board of Standards
and Appeals. That approval
made it legal to use the stuff
in skyscrapers. Joseph Platzkcr,
former commissioner of housing
and building for New York City,
called it to our attention.
"It can be troweled to a marble-smooth
. finish even by the
most inexperienced hand," said
Platzker. "It dries rock-hard
without erarkins, chipping or
peeling, and it can be wallpaper
ed or painted in a matter of
hours with no special scaling or
priming coats."
He pointed out that home
builders, using sypsum wallboard
and a single coat of the new plas
ter arc saving the tedious and
costly problem of taping, filing
and sanding joints as well as the
prime coat of scaler needed on
the porus paper surface of wall
board. "In labor time," he added, "tt
takes two mechanics and a helper
only two days to completely plas
