Nationalist Pilots to
ChallengeMigJet Planes
TAIPEH, Formosa (UP)-Some
morning about U weeks from now
a bunch ol keen young Chinese
Nationalist pilots roar over the
China coast looking (or trouble,
and there will be fireworks.
At long last, the Nationalist air
force is going to get the Sabrejet
. fighter planes fo rwhich it has
begged for months.
Then, for the first time, Nation
alist pilots will be able to challenge
on equal terms the M1G jets wilh
which Soviet Russia has supplied
the Chinese Communists.
The Nationalist pilots have been
ranging over Red-held mainland
territory in F-84 Thunderjels. Even

to speed up delivery of Sabrejets

Sabres On Way '
Now the woni has come through
reliable channels that Sabrejets
are on the way.
It is hoped that the first Sabre
jets will arrive here early in Aug
gust. It will take about six weeks to
yet the first squadron into action
Then the air war over the China
coast will become really hot. .
Gen. Wang Shu Ming' called
"Tiger" Wang, chief of the Na
tionalist air force, has pleaded
again and again for the Sabrejets.
"We can shoot down 10 Migs for
every Sabrejet we lose." Wang
told this correspondent recently.
In Korea, American pilots shot,
down Migs at the rate of 14 to L
"We need at least ISO Sabrejets
to meet the increasing threat of
the Red air forces," Wang said.
IMig Buildup
He and other Nationalist mili
tary leaders have learned through
intelligence reports how big is the
build-up of Migs along the coast.
It is reported that there are
about 350 Migs at bases along the
land. The nearest Mig base is only
au minute iiymg lime from 'For
mosa. '
The first Rabrejet-Mig clash of
the China theater probably will
come around the Tachen islands,
200 miles north of Formosa, and
it will mean a big day for National
ist China.

Fabulous Fall Festival
Dated to Start August 15
The Fabulous Fall Festival of
the Salem Downtown Merchants
Association will start August 15
and end six weeks later at the
end of September.
The date was approved by the
association at Its Marion Hotel
dinner meeting Wednesday night
after the festival plan had been
presented by Ralph Nohlgren.
The name chosen for the sea
son ties in with the Fabulpus
Friday idea that is being used
by the merchants this summer.
In method the Fabulous Fall Fes
tival will follow closely the
spring, fall and Christmas promo
tions of the past, except that it
will be bisfcr. It will be bigger,
it is hoped, in the number of par
ticipating firms, Jn merchandise
prizes and in bonus prizes at the
weekly drawing events.
More than belore merchandise
prizes will be stressed. They will
be more numerous and of higher
value. Sales personnel nf the
stores will be impressed more
than ever before with the im
portance of getting tickets for
the drawings into the hands ef
the customers.
Much was said about the In
conveniences of customers having
to write their names and ad
dresses on each ticket received,
and the possibility . of having
stamping booths set up on the
streets where aome one employ
ed by the merchants can stamp
the ticket! tor the holders was
discusfed.
One major change In tbe fall
festival will be that the weekly
drawing events will be on Sat
urdays at 6 p.m. instead of Fri
days at 9 as heretofore.

PLANE THEFT ,
RICHMOND, Va. (P) Some
body took a plane belonging to
an airline here. Newspapers car
ried stories of the theft. A couple
of days later it reappeared on the
ticket counter. The wing spread
of the plane was 24 inches.
