Box Derby movie, "Opportuni
ty on Wheels," Is available
gain for showing in Salem
for next week, Derby Promo
tion Chairman Dick Rogers an
nounced this week. . . .
The color and sound film
will be available to civic and
business organizations for
showings at noon and evening
meetings and will be shown
for any children's groups that
request it, Bogers said.
Also available will .be the
Salem Derby film taken last
year of the parade and Derby
by the Andy Foster ; Camera
shop and donated to the Derby
association by . Foster and
' Peerless bakery. This film is
also in color but does not have
a sound ' track. However it is
v self-explanatory, Rogers point
ed out.
Any groop wanting one or
both or the films during the
week of June 7 to 12 may
make arrangements to see
them by calling Rogers, tele
phone 2-5550, he announced.
Armed Forces
Enlist Forty
Forty men and 'women .were
enlisted in the Armed Forces by
recruiters on duty, in Salem dur
ing the month of May. . .
Leading' the list ,in the number
recruited was the Navy, which
had 17 enlistees, or 121 per cent
of the quota for the station for
the month. . This was the most
men the Naval recruiting station
here had enlisted since December,
1952.
Of the 17 eight were from Sa
lem. They were Donald Ray
Boynton, route 2, box 277; Charles
Vincent Cooney, 390 South 14th
street; Russell Dean Doss, 1205
South 14th street;: Paul Kenneth
LeVene, route 4, box 138; LeRoy
Leonard McDougal,, 1225 Birch
wood drive; William Noel Mun
day, 1165 South 14th street; Don
ald Ray Rickard, route 2, box
409; Norman Eugene Williams,
2135 University street, -
Other Navy enlistees were Rob
ert Lorenz Schmidt,. William Lar
well King and Byron William
Prather, all of Corvallis; Theron
John French, and Russell Roy
Thiess, Waldport; Treman Ellis
Dodd, Halsey; Morris Glen Carl
son, Lebanon; LeeAUen Earl Herr
mann, Aumsville; and Larey Gail
Fox of Alsea.
Two of the persons enlisted by
the Army and Air Force recruit
ing office were women. One of
them, Lyndelle M. McCoy signed
for duly with the Waf and the
other, Marion Mulcahy, 275 North
14th street, Salem, enlistet in the
Wac.
Of the eight signed for duty
with the regular army, one of the
men, Edward M. Knutson, was a
re-enelistment. The other seven
enlisted in the regular army and
their branch of the army were
Robert A. Johnston, infantry, Sa
lem; Lonnie D. Davis, engineers,
Turner; David L. Weber, military
police, Salem; Bobbie Bouge, mili
tary police, Salem; Lester E.
Pickens, artillery, Newberg; Wil
liam C. Kirchofer, Newberg; and
Donald Lizer, Jr., Kearney, Neb.
The Air Force enlistees were
Jack L. Loveless, Paul F. Schmidt,
Gerald C. Wright and David C.
True, all of Salem; Vernon G,
Riehl, Silverton; Stewart L. Stair.
Turner: and Homer J. Irwin.
Six of the enlistees in May were
signed for duty with the Marine
Corps. They were Frank Lee Gar
land, 1190 Hood street, Salem;
Ernest Ray Young, Albany; John
W. Graves, Hugo, Okla.; Jimmy
Dale Montgomery, and Charles
Lee Grantham, both Sweet Home
and Delwin Marion Linck, route
3, box 914, Salem.
