mind, its fairly easy to under-
aland how a small garden can
make your table g-r-o-a-n with
potential garden wealth.
Fill 'em Up, Come Tanning Time
In planning a small garden, de
cide first just what you intend
to grow in that garden. If you
plan to grow vegetables only, a
fully worked pint, 40x60 feet, will
produce just about all that an
. average family can eat.
Come canning time, be sure to
supply enough fills for the jars,
since it may surprise you just
how much good gardens much
smaller than the dimensions quot
ed above will produce in the
way of fine table vegetables.
Site a Matter of Taste
Large or small, medium or just
"middlin'," it's all a matter of
taste when it comes to the site
of the garden that's best for you.
Sometimes, small gardens just
won't satisfy the "green soul"
of down-to-earth, dyed-in-the
green gardeners. They rant and
rave that they must have more
space for asparagus, and winter
squash, as well as a half-acre
solely for the growth of fruits
of every description pears,
peaches, plums, dwarf apples,
strawberries, raspberries, black
berries, grapes and you-name-it
It almost goes without saying
that some provision has to be
made for growing flowers old
standbys like roses, zinnias, lilies
and the more exotic blooms.
Naturally, such a garden will
cover a half-acre or more much
' more area than the average gar
dener has time or inclination to

Numbers Needed
MOST HOUSES have official
street num'iers. But finding the
numbers is something else again.
If you want to be found when a
telegram comas announcing you're
the heir to a legacy, post your
house number where everyone can
see it.
Any postman will tell you that
the mailbox and the house num
ber go together like ham and eggs.
This sort of uniformity makes it
easier finding a number on a dark
night. Of course, illuminated nu
merals help, too, and that problem
can be solved easily with light-
reflecting or absorbing materials.
Perhaps your house numbers
are illegible, poorly located or
otherwise outmoded. Why not
make a distinctive set yourself?
AU you need is some hardboard
of the tempered pressed wood type
and a scroll saw or coping saw,
which cuts curves. First, design
the letters so they're large enough
and look right. Transfer the de
sign to tt-inch-tiiick hardboard and
start cutting.
Sand down any rough edges. The
numerals may be mounted direct
ly on the siding, using waterproof
glue or finishing nails, or placed
on a piece of shaped hardwood.
Paint the hardboard on both sides,
for wea the rp roofing reasons, be
fore putting the numbers up. For
a reflective surface, obtain from
your hardware dealer tiny glass
beads or a special tape.

paper with clear cold water, then
sponge with cool suds, working
in one direction with even
strokes. Rinse at once with clear,
cold water.
