to another new high since 1948
Monday when two loads of choice
butchers sold at $28.50, up 10 cents
from the peak of last week end.
Butchers generally sold strong to
25 cents higher while sows were
around 25 cents higher. -Most
choice 180 to 200 pound butchers
moved at $28.00 to $28.40 with 270
to 325 pounders $27.25 to $28.00.
Sows brought $23.00 to $20.00.
Salable receipts totaled 7,500.
In the cattle section high choice
and prime steers sold steady to
strong while other grades were
strong to 50 cents higher. A few
prime steers sold at $28.50 to
$29.50, the top. Good to low choice
types brought $21.50 to $24 00 with
comparable heifers $22.00 to $22.50.
Cows advanced 25 cents, topping
at $15.00 while bulls were steady
to 50 - cents higher, reaching a
peak of $16.50. Salable receipts
totaled 15,000 head.
Slaughter lambs sold steady to
mostly 50 cents higher. Sheep held
steady. Two loads of choice and
prime fed wooled lambs were
taken at $26.50. Good and choice
wooled native lambs brought
$22 00 to $24 00. Salable sheep
totaled l.ono.

CHICAGO Soybeans soared
as much as 10 cents, the limit
permitted in a single session, as
grains experienced a mild case of
war jitters on the board of trade
Monday.
This was the first trading ses
sion following Vice President Nix I
on's comments on the possibility j
of using U S. troops in the Indo
china War.
Wheat was strong, gaining as
much as 4 cents at one, time. Corn, !
oats and rye firmed but their ad-'
vances were not unusually large,

annual convention of the diocese
of Oregon, Episcopal church, the
event to be in Salem, April 25,
26 and 27 with St. Paul's church
ai host.
Opening service will be at 7:30
p m. Sunday in St. Paul's Church,
the Rt. Rev. Benjamin D. Dag
well, bishop of the diocese, to
give the convention address at
that time. A reception will follow
the service.
The Monday session begins at
7:30 a.m. with Holy Communion,
business sessions sUrting at 10

to be at 0:30 p.m. Monday at
the Marion hotel. Business ses

were held Friday, April 16 in
Pallas lor William Henry Pelkey,
68, of Sheridan, who was killed
in a jeep accident this week.
Burial was in the Dallas cemetery.
Survivors arc his wife, Mary E.
Piercy Tclkey of Sheridan; four
daughters, Edith E. Eddings of
Dallas; Ruby Bel hell of Sheridan,
Iva Jones of Dill, Okla., and Vera
Stevens of Myrtle Point; four
sons, E. W. Pelkey of Empire: Joe
and Odis Pelkey of Sheridan, and
Alvin Pelkey who ii serving in
Japan with the navy; 17 grand
children and one great grand

Alfred Edwin Bathke, veteran ol
world war lt, had been a member
of the Monmouth police depart
ment for three years and for the
last two years had been chief. In
the service he served as a corp
oral with the 1040th air force
base unit and was discharged in
1846 at Santa Ana, Calif, coming
to Monmouth at that time.
lie was a member of the Mon
mouth American Legion post No.
65 and had formerly been a mem
ber of the Normal IOOF lodge of
Monmouth. He was born Feb. 11,
1921 at Ladysmith, Wise. Sur
vivors are his wife, Freeda and
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin
Bathke, of Independence: a sis
ter, Mrs. Myrtle Schroeder, Mon
mouth: five brothers, Glen of
Talbot: Kenneth of Independ
ence; Fred, U.S. army in Ger
many; Leonard, U.S. army in
Korea: John, U.S. army at Ft
Lewis.
