Society Rejects
Joliof-Curie
NEW YORK Ifl - A member
ship application from Nobel Prize
winning French Chemist-physicist
time. Irene Joliot-Curie has been
rejected by the American Chem
ical Society on the belief she is
Communist.
Mme. Joliot-Curie said in 1948
when she came to America for
a lecture tour and was detained
briefly on Ellis Island that she
was sympathetic to Communism
"in many things" but was not a
party member.
Disclosure of her application
came in correspondence published
by the monthly Bulletin 'of the
Atomic Scientist, out Monday.
Mme. Joliot-Curie was ousted by
the French government from its
atomic energy commission in 1951.
Her husband. Frederic Joliot .
Curie had been removed-as head
of the body a year earlier because
of Communist associations.

Bulte Miners
Stall Election
BUTTE, Mont. OH Bulte Mi
ners' Union No 1, stalled in its
bid for a National Labor Rela
tions Board election, moved Sun
day for a District Court election
to determine its bargaining agent
The action was voted by an
estimated 800 miners affiliated
with the International Union of
Mine, Mill & Smelter Workers
(Ind) They afe warring with a
group affiliated with the United
Steel Workers of America (CIO)
over what union shall represent
them i
The steel workers' group blocked
a proposed NLRB election through
legal action It insisted instead
that a vote be held jointly by
Butte miners and Anaconda smel
termen in a single bargaining unit.
An NLRB examiner said a hear
ing will be held hero about March
1 on the dispute.
Dist. Judge John B. McClergnan
warned, however, that should there
be "failure, resfual or inability"
on an election by March 1, the
court would appoint an impartial
labor relations board of its own.
The CIO faction bolted the
IUMM&SW last December, charg
ing its leadership was Communist
dominated. Mine-Mill was ousted
from the CIO in 1950 on a similar
charge.
