On Sunday, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Shawver, a birth day dinner was enjoyed, honor ing their daughter, Mrs. .John orr, who wan tier nusband and children came from Gladstone for the day. Other guests were Mr, Shawver's sister, Mrs. Joyce Cole man of Oregon City and Kath ryn Mickcl of Portland. After noon guests were Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Orr of McMinnville. Slides were shown in the aft ernoon, which were taken by Lt. and Mrs. James Shawver in France. Mrs. Gordon Matthews and daughter Beverly were hostesses lor a baby shower recently, hon oring Mrs John Dodge. The par ty was held in the high school class room at the Christian rhtlrvh. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Dowefc and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sherman at tended the basketball gave in Eugene Tuesday, and were guests of their son, Dill, and of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Whitney. Art Robinson has received word of the serious illness of his sister, Mrs. Bessie Hurt, in San Francisco, Calif. Kathryn Micgcl is spending some time here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Shawver, fol lowing a recent back injury. Mr. and Mrs. Art. Robinson visited here sister, Mrs. Charles Johnson, in Nrwberg, on Satur day. On Sunday, they went to Portland and visited her son, Leonard Stearns, and family. Dave Robinson came over Sun day evening from McMinnville.- Earl F Sutton, missing fire man in the SP&S tiain wreck, in the Deschutes river Sunday, near Maupin, was a nephew of Mrs. Earle Colmrn; and ; cousin of Urie S. Aldermi n and Mrs. John Shclburne of Dundee. Sutton was the son of Mrs. Harvey (Phoebe) Mates of Port land. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Owens and family visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Hobson at Ball ston and enjoyed dinner, on Sun day. Will Ditto, who has been in the Providence hospital in Port land, is home and recuperating nicely. Mrs. Dclauriee Helming and her mother, Mrs. Pearl Crabtrce, are - spending a week or ao in Portland. Mrs. Florence Mosgrove was a recent gu of her son and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mos grove. In the afternoon they visited in the V'cldon Swan home. Mrs. Anna Woodward and her sister, Louise Harmon, left Sun day for Lincoln, Neb., where they will visit relatives foi about three months. They will also visit in Fort Morgan, Colo. Mrs. J. A. McIIenry enjoyed a trip to Port.and Tuesday, where she visited some friends. Mrs. Ma rion Hunt, chairman, presided during the business meeting. S218 was received from the March of Dimes polio drive from the Union Hill and surrounding school districts. The Care pack age sent from the club was re ceived in Germany. Four letters were received from individuals in Germany expressing their ap preciation for the packages. On Feb.' 13 the club will spon sor a benefit card party at the home of Mrs. Joanna Speed. Committee in charge is Mrs. Ro bert Humphreys, Mrs. Speed, Mrs. Henry Peters, Mrs. Howard Rogers and Mrs. Ralph Mollet. Mrs. Maurice Heater told about her trip to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Jose and other points of interest in California and Nevada. Mrs. Verny Scott told of her trip to Fort Eustis, DenbiKh, Va.. Washington, D.C., and other noted plnces in the cast. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Heater returned to their home on Wed ncsday evening after a two weeks vacation in the southern states. Wells has just completed an enlistment in the coast guard and was formerly life guard here. Plans for conducting the "1954 Crusade for Freedom" in sup port of "Radio Free Europe" in the Woodburn area Feb. 12 through 22 were outlined at the meeting of the Woodburn city council Tuesday night by Dr. James R. Dearen. The campaign will include the signing of "Freedom Scrolls' and donating 'unds to aid "Radio Free Europe," a priivate enter prise with 21 stations carrying the truth to people behind the iron curtain. V Dallas DALLAS A grandson will be honored when the First Presby terian church of Portland ob serves its centennial Feb. 10. Rev. George F. Whitworth, grandfather of Sidney S. Whit worth, Dallas superintendent of schools, presided at the organi zation meeting of the church 100 years ago on this date. Rev. Whitworth came west as a home missionary in 1853, with the intention of settling In the Pugct Sound country. He spent the winter of 1853-1854 in Port- i land and with another minister j organized the Portland church j on Feb. 10. 1954. Whitworth is concluding his : 30th year as an elder in the ! Thursday she left by bus for Los Angeles where she will vacation. She expects to be gone three weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Young were in Portland this week on business. This is their second child. The daughter is two years of age.
