more timber and suffered less (ire
loss than ever before.

Stone said the sales totaled 2,455,
007,000 board feet, valued at 36
million dollars. This was 438 mil
lion feet more than in the previous
high of 1952. It was 91 per cent of
the allowable cut under the Forest
Service's sustained yield plan.
With no long dry spells, the fire
loss was held to 1,552 acres. That
was 50 per cent under the previous
low year of 1948. For the first time
not a single fire reached 300 acres
in size.
Stone said entomologists report
ed that bark beetle infestation de
creased. As part of the control
program, the Forest Service sold
387 million board feet of timber
that had been blown down or been
killed by beetles.
More than 1 'i billion feet re
main to be salvaged, but the For
est Service intends to push an ac
cc: road program to speed up the
process.
Hot Wafer Yielded

well owners today were trying to
solve the mystery of the appear
ance of hot water in their well,
where it comes from and why.
The men, Clayton Driscoll and
Lueien Cue, dug the well three
years ago and it has bec.n an ex
cellent source of irrigation water
and cool drinks, but when Dris
coll cleaned it out Sunday, he
found it filled with lukewarm
water.
Driscoll and Cue pumped out
the well and let it fill up again
hut still the water tested about
75 degrees.
Only possible source for the
arm water Is a hot spring, the
men say, but there has never
been a hot spring in the area.
