Strike-It-Rich' Defies
New York City's Drive
nkw YORK t New York
City's drive again ,t radio-TV give
away programs that get money
from tne pupuc was ueucu
night by "Strike It rich," first ot
the shows to be criucizea.
The program went on tne . air
without changing its format or
waiting for the license the Welfare
Department saw It snouia nave.
Welfare Commissioner Henry L.
McCarthy yesterday declared that
nrocrams like this are a national
discrace" and "play into the hands
of the Communists."
The program questions people
who tell hard-luck stones. They
win prizes by correctly answering
the quiz, and then people phone
in to offer cash, jobs, homes and
other aid.
This outs it in the same cate
gory as a charity, the Welfare De
partment rules, and should be li
censed. , . .
McCarthy's ire was directed at
Strike It Rich" because, he said,
at least 55 families, lured by the
promise of "easy money," have
chased the program's rainbow
from all over the country right onto
New York City's relief rolls.
The Welfare Department sug
gested that producer Walter Fra
mer change the program's format.
Warren Hull, the "Strike it Klch"
master of ceremonies, briefly told
listeners last night about tne
"Heart Fund," the part of the pro
gram under fire.
"We have 'never asked for any
contributions whatever," Hull de
clared and told how the fund is
audited. '
He insisted that it's all gravy
for the recipients, none of the
money going for overhead.
"Some people sort of criticize
'S'nke It Rich," " he said. "I don't
get it it's a funny world."
People who appear on the show
also get money put up by the
sponsor, the Colgate-Palmolive Co.,
if they answer questions correctly.
Sidney J. Dubroff, the show's
public relations man, told news
conference, "We do not want to
step on Mr. McCarthy's toes (but)
we do not feel any laws were be
ing violated.
"We have courts for the adjudi
cation of such problems."

Slide Cleared,
Trains Roll Again
MAUPIN,' Ore. HI - Trains be
gan rolling Wednesday night over
the Oregon Trunk Railroad, which
had been knocked out of service
Sunday night by a train wreck.
The locomotive of a freight train
hit a rock slide and crashed into
the Deschutes River near here,
carrying two crew members to
their death.
Repair crews worked steadily
three days before getting the line
cleared. The line, which follows
the Deschutes River through Cen
tral Oregon, is an important
freight connection between the Pa
cific Northwest and California.
