Record Income in '53
Despite End
WASHINGTON to - The Ameri
can public had a record income in
1953. the Commerce Department
laid Wednesday, despite a dip in
personal income at the end of the
year.
And, the department said, in
terms of real spending power, as
well as total dollar income, indi
viduals had more than ever in
1953, despite continued price rises
and division of the income among
a bigger population.
The department's monthly re
port on personal income said that
in December the annual rate of
oiTsonal income fell off about 1
billion dollars to 285 billions which

accountant went on trial in an in
come tax fraud case Tuesday and
the government said it would show
he started out with a false return
for his employer and wound up by
owning the business.
The accountant's attorney said
that was pretty much news to him
and he expected to be able to cast
serious doubt on it.
It is R. H. W. Leathers who is
on trial in the federal court of
Judge James A. Fee. He is charg
ed on counts of attempting to evade
the income tax and with preparing
a false return.

ployment which took place during

ary. But for 1953 as a whole, per
sonal income totaled 284H billion
dollars, which was 6 per cent more
than in 1952 when personal income
totaled 269 billion dollars.

E'senhower Wednesday vetoed
three bills to permit coinage of
commemorative SO cent pieces.
He contended that commemora
tive coins tend to create confusion,
facilitiate counterfeiting and de
tract from the fundamental func
tion of coins as a medium of ex
change.
The vetoes, first of this session
of Congress, were returned against
bills to authorize issuance of a
million 50-cent pieces to celebrate
the tercentennial celebration of the
founding of Northampton, Mass.,
2Vj million coins in honor of the
150th anniversary of the Louisiana
purchase, and five million coins
commemorating the tercentennial
of the founding of the city of New
York.
'GEN, CHINA' SENTENCED

ish court Wednesday sentenced
the No. 2 fighting leader of the
anti-white Mau Mau terrorists,
self-styled "Gen. China," to die.
He was found tuilty of consort
ing with armed persons and of
unlawfully possessing two rounds
of ammunition.
