OREGON COLLEGE, MON MOUTH The Portland Stale Vikings furnish the next Ore gon Collegiate Conference op position on Friday and Satur day nights for the OCE Wolves. The Friday .ight game Is at Monmouth and the return game on Saturday is billed for Port land State's home floor, the new Lincoln High gym In Port land. The Wolves biggest chal lenge this week is trying to de vise ways and means of slow ing down the sensational scor ing of the 6' 5" Viking center, Don Porter. Don is a McMinn ville boy who played for the Oregon Frosh last year, who has averaged nearly 25 points per game. Outstanding players in the State supporting cast are Ron Brown, Astoria; Rick Green, Por'.'l d; Johnny Fought also .' Portland boy- he is a transer from Brigham Young University; and another Portlander Dick Perkins, Both the Wolves and the Vikings split conference series last week-end with Eastern Oregon and O.T.I, respectively. These games left Eastern Ore gon leading the pack with a 4 2 record while OCE with 3-3 is tied with O.T.I, at 4-4. Port land State's conference record is 1-3. Jim Rice Withdraws In the Wolves Friday con quest of the Eastern Oregon team, OCE outrebounded and outshot the Mountaineers. But Saturday night the Mounties swept the boards and fired from the field at 43 clip while the Wolves could hit only their season average of 33 The Oregon College reserve strength has been further de pleted with the withdrawal from school of freshman Jim Rice. Rice was an outstanding prospect from Salem who had cracked the starting lineup on several occasions. Ill ' Corvallis high school retained its hold on first place in the Big Six here Tuesday night with a thrilling 53-48, last-minute win over the stubborn, racehorse Salem High Vikings. The visiting Spartans led most of the route until a big third quar ter surge by Salem made Corvallis scramble for points in the final two minutes to protect their second place rating in the state. It was tied 43-43 with about three minutes to go but the Spartans' ace center, big Dave Gambee, sank two quick field goals for a 47-43 lead and Salem could get no clos er than two points in the final two minutes. Take 6-0 Opening Lead Gambee's hook shot put the visitors into a 2-0 lead at the start and then two field goals by Dick Ko.'ord gave the Spartans a 6-0 lead with two minutes gone. Har old Hank's Vikings moved back to trail by four points at the quar ter 11-7. Gumbee and Koford each had five points in the initial period for all but one of the Spartan points. Corvallis built the four point first quarter lead into a 31-19 halftime lead with a 20 point quarter, main ly because of the six and a half foot Gambee's nine points and Ko ford's six. Bob Wulf, M Junior center, led the Viking cause in the second period with eight of the 12 Salem points. Then late in the third quar ter Salem began to move as Tom Pickens began to hit from far out. Three tree throws by Jim Knapp and a field goal and a free shot by Gordy Domogalla carried Salem within three points of Corvallis with less than three minutes left in the third quarter. Then Knapp sank field goal to make it 34-35 in favor of the Spartans. Tied at 36-36 Gambee's free throw made it 36- 34 but then Pickens came through with a long shot to tie it up at m-m wim i:J5 ielt in ine quarter. Pickens' free throw put Salem ahead but Koford gave Corvallis tne lead 38-37. with 30 seconds left in the period Wulf put Salem ahead 39-38, which wa the quarter margin. A free throw by Bob Langton and a field goal by Crawford Taylor put Corvallis into a 41-39 lead with almost two minutes gone in the final quarter. The two clubs ex changed goals and it was 43-41 for Corvallis with 3:15 remaining in the game. Pickens hit a long goal to tie up the game for the last time at 43 all but Gambee sank two quick field goals and the Spartans led 47-43. In the final two minutes or the hard fought game Salem could get no closer than two points. The loss was the seventh against eight wins for Salem, now ranked tenth in the Associated Press Poll. Corvallis is ranked second. Last night's los was the econd of the seaon to Corvallis by the Vikings who lot the earlier game 52-38 at Corvallis. This week-end Salem meets sixtn ranked Grants Pass in a two game series at Salem. Grant Pass split a two game series with the strong Marshficld Pirates while Salem sost twice to the Pirates sast week end. Salem Jayvees Win The Salem high junior varsity won the preliminary game 47-40 over the Corvallis junior varsity. Lee Gustafson's Salem JV's led by slim margins during most of the game after trailing 10-9 with one quarter gone in the game. The game saw Corvallis score only seven field goals. They made two in the first quarter and dur ing the second and until the final moments of the thirn quarter the Spartans failed to hit the bucket for a two-pointer. They had four field goals in the last quarter. Halftime favored Salem 18-16 and it led 30-."6 at the end of three, Don Zeh led Salem with 15 points while Fcnton Lochenour had eight. Lochenour scored five in the final minutes to insure the Salem the win. Jack Gambee led the Corval lis sqoad with 15. It was the second win for Salem's junior varsity over Corvallis this year.
