Russian Agent in Japan
Granted Asylum in U. S.

Rastovorov, a Russian diplomat
Intelligence agent, asked for and
was granted political asylum by
the United States.
The source, who refused to be
Identified, told The Associated
Press it is almost certain that
Rastovorov has left Japan and may
be en route to the United States.
A Russian spokesman accused
the United States of kidnaping
Rastovorov, second secretary of the
Soviet mission to Tokyo, which
Japan does not recognize. The ob
ject, he charged, was "provoca
tion of the Soviet Union."
Official American sources in
Tokyo said they knew nothing of
the matter.
The break in the long silence
on the cloak-and-dagger story of.
nastnvorov stirred speculation that
the largest spy ring in Asia may
have been cracked.
The affable 34-year-old Russian
diplomat disappeared from the
Soviet Embassy Jan. 24, on the
eve of his scheduled departure I .r
Russia.
There was speculation that the
Russian had been flown Saturday
to Okinawa, a huge U. S. base 700
miles south of here.

Field said today charges that
she engaged in any improper con
duct with James Roosevelt are
"totally false and untrue."
Mrs. Field, a divorcee who is
now in the real estate business
here, was one of nine women
listed in a letter which Roose
velt's wife filed with her suit for
separate maintenance. The let
ter, allegedly written by Roose
velt, acknowledged improper
conduct with various women.
Mrs. Field's name was followed
bv the phrase, "various periods
In 1942, 1943 and 1944."
Mrs. Field said she is "com
pletely innocent" and such link
ing of her name to Roosevelt has
been "lerribly embarrassing it
hit me like a ton of bricks."
"We've always been friends
but nothing more," she told a
reporter.
She said Roosevelt telephoned
her recently to apologize lor the
embarrassment to which she has
been subjected.
"He told me his wife apparent
ly accused avcry women he had
ever been friendly with of con
sorting with him."

intelligence agent. The Russian
diplomats had free run of Japan
and have been in a position to
gather information on U. S. bases.
Kyodo news agency reported
earlier that Rastovorov was being
returned to the Soviet Union to
explain how he botched a spy as
