Coach to Have

STARKVILLE, Miss. U) -Young
parrell Royal faced a tough prob
lem at Mississippi State Tuesday
after fate added an ironic touch
to the almost unexpected realiza
tion of his football ambitions.
The 29-year-old native of Mollis,
Okla., now serving as head coach
of the Edmonton Eskimos of the
Canadian professional league, was
named head coach Mdnday, suc
ceeding Murray Warmath who re
signed last Friday to take over as
head coach at Minnesota.
Royal will return next week to
State where he served as an as
sistant in 1952 and helped War
math install the tricky uplit-T of
fense and give State its most suc
cessful season in five years.
But Royal returns a year too
late to capitalize on the quarter-
oacKing of Jackie Parker, whom
he transferred from an untried
junior college product into the
most valuable player in the South
eastern Conference and the na
tion's leading scorer.
Mississippi State president Ben
Hilbun and athletic director C. R.
(Dudy) Noble said Royal was
signed to a four-year contract and
is expected to report within a week
to set up the spring football
practice schedule. Terms of the
contract were not disclosed.

of the professional Detroit Lions
or to go directly into the high
school coaching field.
The Linfield college fullback
received a bid last week on the
basis of his performance as one
of the leading ground gainers in
small college ranks. He is being
considered by several schools as
a high school coach.
Paul Durham, Linfield coach,
said Rutscbman's selection came
as no surprise. to him. "He has
all the qualities and ability to
make him a standout among the
pros," Durham said.
