Transformers Tipped Six
teen electrical transformers were
tipped over and damaged at the
Portland General Electric com
pany parking lot, 780 North Lib
erty street, Saturday afternoon,
It was reported to city police.
The transformers, ranging in
value from about $200 to over
$300 were not believed extensive
ly damaged but would have to be
checked thoroughly te make
sure, company officials said.
Money Feund-A purse with over
. $20 in it was turned in to the city
police station Saturday evening by
14-year-old Lee Golden, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Virgil T. Golden, 605

the purse in front of the First Meth
odist church parsonage, the youth
said. There was no identification
in the purse, police said. They are
holding it for claiming by the own

Pane Broken-Thc screen was
pulled from a bedroom window and
the window pane broken at the

street. Mrs. Dennis reported to city
police Sunday morning. Apparently
the house had not been entered,
she said.
Cars Collide - Two cars were
damaged Saturday afternoon as
one swerved to miss a boy and a
dog in the street and struck the
other car parked at the curb. Jer
ome F. Bischoff, 965 North Fifth
street, toid police he was driving in

the bov and dog dashed in front of
him. His car suffered considerable
front end damage and the parked
car of F. D. Eason, 735 South
Church street, suffered consider
able rear end damage, police said.
To Open Bid Bids for the
eounty's requirements of gasoline,
diesel oil and other petroleum
products will be opened at 10:30
a.m. Feb. 18. It is estimated
the county will need 94,500 gal
lons of gasoline during the 12
months period beginning March.

Mother Dies Martha McNeil,
resident of Vancouver, Wash., and
mother of Sid McNeil of the balem
branch, Pacific Fruit and Produce
company, passed away recently
after an illness ot more man a
year. Funeral services brought
closer for the first time in a num
ber of years, all of the mother's
six sons. Four of them live in
Canada and another in England.
"At this time 1 was entering the
fifth year of my active service in
the Marine Corps, much ol it
o'erseas. ' -
'Unfortunately, due to prior
physical disabilities accentuated
by malaria contracted in the South
Pacific, 1 was very much below
par physically.
I further was actually con
scious oi the tremendous ouraen
which my father was then carry
ing as .President of the united
States, and the horror of adding
another to these burdens seemed
to me to be overwhelming.
'I was promised that if I would
sign a letter that attorneys would
prepare, it would never be made
public and that in time it would
be destroyed.
"I wrongly believed that no in
dividual in their right mind could
or would ever make public such
a statement" .
Roosevelt said he had fully ac
cepted his wife's statement that
all such documents had been de
stroyed.
Earlier in the day,' at the urging
of. Democratic Party leaders,
Roosevelt released his supporters
"from any further obligation in
connection with his hopes for a
scat in Congress.

Community Council Meeting-
The Community Council will
meet Thursday night at 7:30 in
the office of Judge Joseph a,
Felton, room 203, Old High School
building. Besides routine busi
ness reports will be made from
the family, child welfare and

Cash, Keys Takes About $25
in rash and the keys to the fam
ily car were taken from the purse
of Mrs. James jrouey, in me
kitchen of the home at 940 Hood
street, Friday morning, it was
reported to city police Saturday
evening. Method of entry into
the house was not determined,
police said.
County Agent Moves The
county agent's office, located in
the school administration build
ing for the past two years, was
being moved to the new court
house Monday. The agent's of
fices will be on the basement
floor in the southeast corner.

Car Tank Drained About
one-fourth of a tank of gas was
drained from his car late last
week while the car was parked
in front of his home, Dr. Dale G.
Parker, 1595 Berry street, re
ported to city police Saturday
night.
Stella Mae Anthony
Services Thursday
Mrs. Stella Mae Anthony, 80,
resident of Salem for the past
four vears. died at a nursing
home Sunday night. She was born
in Ohio, July 15, 1873.
Survivors include two daugh
ters, Marie McMilien of Chinook,
Wash., and Zeima Giidow of
Klamath Falls; two grandsons in
Salrm. Warne H. and j. A. Nunn;
four other grandchildren and
several great grandchildren.
Funeral services will he held
at the M3cy Mortuary. McMinn
ville, at 1:30 Thursday afternoon
with burial in the Evergreen

Elmer L Peebler of
Salem-Albany Dies
Funeral services will be held
Tuesday in Albany for Elmer Lew
is Peebler. 80, resident of the Sa
lem and Albany communities for a
number of years.
Peebler had been employed by
the Cummings Transfer company
in Albany for several years. Hei
was born "in Adams, Ore., January!
9. 1874. He had lived in Oregon!
most of his life. He had been in
ill health for about two months.
Surviving him are four daugh
ters, Mrs, Thyra Zimmerman,
Gresham, Mrs. Hazel Taibert, Al
bany, Mrs. Inez Faxon, Toledo, and
Mrs. Betty Hayes, Salem: and a
son, C-ionn Peebler, Lebanon.
Services will be held at the Fish
er Funeral home at 11 a m. with
burial in Albany. .
