Suspect Burglar
Held as Drunk
A man,, believed to be the burg
lar who stole two purses from a
Salem hotel room early Wednesday
morning, li in custody of city po
lice on a drunk charge pending
further Investigation into the case.
Police were ."lied shortly after
4 a.m. to the roiel where Bonnie
Blythe, Eugene, and Mary Wil
liams, Portland, reported that they
had been awakened by the. sound
of a door closing and found two
purses belonging to Miss Blythe
missing.
While officers were talking to the
two women, a man came down the
hall and began running when an
officer spoke to him. The two of
ficers quickly collared him and
found that he had $24 in bills in his
pocket in the same denominations
the woman reported missing. '
The man denied any connection
with the theft, however, saying he
was merely on his way to eat when
(topped. A check of his room
failed to turn up anything but one
of the officers found the two pur
, aes wrapped in a cloth on the star
way landing across the hall from
the suspect's room. The money
was missing but other items were
Intact, police said.
He was taken to the police sta
tion, where he said he was from
Redding, Calif., but had been in
Seattle and Portland. He had no
Identification papers on him, offi
cers said. A check of the name he
gave revealed that a person with a
similar name was wanted here on
two bad check charges. A witness
identified him as the person want
ed on one charge and another wit
ness said he was not the man want
ed on the other charge, police said.
Police are continuing the investi
gation before making any further
arrests.
