the speaker was Nicholas Jaure
guy, prominent Portland attorney
who addressed the 20th annual in
stallation banquet of the Oregon
Association of Real Estate Boards
at the Marion hotel.
The audience learned that the
dower provisions in Oregon are
substantially the same as those
set forth in Magna Carta and that
they are based on common law
usage.- The Dregon law regard-
ing dower, was copied from the
Michigan statutes bearing on the
subject.'
Jaureguy, during a discourse of
more than an hour brought out
many unusual facts concerning the
rights of spouses. He pointed out
that post nuptial agreements be
tween the parties involved are not
valid and that the assignment of
dower rights are extremely rare.
Down through the years, the
Portland attorney pointed out,
women have gained considerably
in connection with property rights.

NEW EDUCATIONAL CENTER GIVEN START
These Catholic clergymen Sunday participated In ground
breaking ceremonies for the new Serra High School at Lan
caster Drive and D Street From left, Father John Francis,
Father Martin Thielen, and Father Kevin Murphy.
Ground Broken Sunday
For Serra High School
By MARGUERITE GLEESON
Fomal ground breaking for the
first unit of Junipcro Serra Cath
olic High School was held Sun
day afternoon at the Lancaster
and D Street site on the east edge
of Salem.
Rev. Martin Thielen, superin
tendent of schools for the arch
diocese, 'officiated et -the cere
mony and spoke briefly on the
project ' i
While the new high school
which Father Thielen referred to
as "Salem's second catholic nign
school." will eventually be co-.
educational, for both boys and
girls, it will start out in Septem-
berbcr 1954 with freshmen and
sophomore classes fof boys only.
Juniors will be added in 1955 and
seniors in 1956.
No boy will ever have to leave
Serra High School because there
is not a class for him if he starts
next fall," Father Thielen said.
Junipero Serra High School was
made possible at this time be
cause the Franciscans were able
and willing to extend their work
into Oregon, the speaker said. It
had originally been planned to
have priests of the archdiocese
teach the school but parish de
mands made this impossible.
Paving tribute to the Sisters of
the Holy Names "Who have pro-
1 1 vided Salem with a Catholic high
I school for 91 years," Father
I Thielen said this order had been
unable to provide teachers for
the new high school and had sug
gested the Franciscan sisters of
Lacrosse, Wis.
Sisters from
the Wisconsin
foundation will arrive in Salem
in July and will teach, in Serra
high school when it is started.
They will live in a convent to be
built from the remodeled two
houses now on the Lancaster
street property. This will be their
first western foundation except
one at Spokane.
While eventually part of the
building now being erected will j
be used for living quarters for the i
Franciscan fathers, it will at first :
serve as class rooms.
Salem was started as an edu
cational renter, an unusual dis
tinction for a capital city. Father
Thielen said in speaking of the
reason lor the name for the new
school. He referred to the fact
that the Methodist mission insti
tute was moved from Mission j
Bottom to the present location of j
Salem. !
While there are many opinions !
and theone for the name Salem. I
Father Thielen said he preferred
to believe the one which said j

native town. The speaker said the
town was first called Chemeketa,
a Caloopoian Indian word for
peace and he thought Leslie in
renaming the town remembered
Salem was the Hebrew word for
peace and so gave it to the town.
Junipero Serra traveled up
the California coast and built
eight missions, after coming to
the new world by way of Spain
from his birthplace in Majorca,
an island on the coast of Africa.
His name will provide a fitting
challenge to the students of the
new high school the speaker said.
The school in Salem will be placed
under the protection of "Mary
Queen of Peace," Father Thiei.'n
said.
Father Kevin Murphy, OFM,
one of the two Franciscans now
in Salem, presided at the cere
mony. Father John Francis OFM,
is the second member of the order
now in Salem. Except for the four
parishes in the state, the Salem
school will be the first Oregon
foundation of the Santa Barbara
province. The Franciscan sisters
from LaCrosse will be making
their first west coast foundation,
except for one at Spokane, Wash.
Boy Scouts Irom Troops 6 and
16 and Explorer Troop 16, which
included boys from the parishes
of St. Vincent dc aulP and St.
Joseph provided the color guard.
Between 100 and 150 persons
attended the ceremony which was
concluded just a few minutes
before the weather changed and
instead of a cold, driving wind,
snow began to fall. All participants
and onlookers had huddled in the
lea of the contractors buildings
in the effort to get out of the
cutting wind.

Baney. a 32-year-old merchant

Baney's attorneys Saturday pro

The Price of Delay
A man was examined a few weeks
ago who had injured his spine
four years ago. A friend had sug
gested Natural Methods of treat
ment at the time but the man ad
mitted he knew a short cut that
would be less expensive. Treat
ments were given. In six weeks
he returned to work still a little
sore and suffering somewhat but
felt he could gradually "wear it
out" in time. Since then and per
iodically spinal pains have caused
him to miss work for several
weeks at a time. Recently more
serious symptoms have develop
ed. His legs now became numb for
hours at a time and a serious
bowel ailment has developed. The
spinal examination shows the or
iginal injury was never corrected.
The palliative measures used
simply offered relief for the time
being while nerve pressures
gradually took their toll. This is
often the penalty of delay. Do not
permit this to happen to you.
Hurry!
