OSC Needs Clean Sweep
Of Series With Oregon
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The University of Oregon Ducks
and Oregon State Beavers were
knocking at the front door Mon
day in the Pacicic Coast Confer
ence Northern Division basketball
race. The Vandals of Idaho were
mulling over their chances of slip-j
ping in the back door.
Oregon forged to the top of the
standings with a 5-1 record during
the past weekend by sweeping a
two-game series with Washington,
77-76 on Friday night and 64-48
Saturday night.
Oregon State lost ground by
splitting a pair with the Vandals,
dropping the opener Friday night,
70-55, and taking Saturday's con
test, 69-53.
Washington State drew a bye.
Oregon and Oregon State hook
up this week in a crucial series
for both squads. They play at Cor
vallis Friday night and move to
Kugene for the second game of
the series Saturday night.
Washington steps out of the con
ference this Friday and Saturday
night to play a two-game series
with Brigham Young of the Sky
line Conference at Seattle.
Oregon State dropped, Idaho Sat
. urday night with new strategy
cooked up by coach Slats Gill.
Gill had three of his highest play
ers, Swede Halbrook, Jay Dean
and Tex Whitcman, pack the key
while two speed merchants, John
ny Jarboe and Ron Fundingsland,
handled the ball on the outside,
until they could get a clear shot
at the hoop or pass to the tall
guys inside.
The trategy proved effective as
it was aided and abetted by Hal
brook's 27 points and Jarboe's 10.
Dreeon. hard-Dressed Friday
n'ght, found the Huskies tough to
handle during the first period Sat
urday night but put the handcuffs
on Washington in the second pe
riod and left the floor at the half
with a 42-27 bulge.
