Cold, icy and wet weather con
tinued to plague wide areas in
the eastern two-thirds of the coun
try Friday.
The frigid cold that has numbed
northern Midwest areas for near
ly a week continued, but tempera
tures were not as low as Thurs
day. It was 21 degrees below zero
In International Falls, Minn., com
pared to a bone-chilling -41 Thurs
day in the city on the Minnesota
Canada border. '
Snow and cold hit areas in the
Southwest with a fall of seven
inches of snow on the ground in
Walnut Ridge, Arkansas.
Rain and thunderstorms were
general over the lower Mississippi
valley eastward into Georgia and
northward into Tennessee, the Car-
olinas and Virginia. There was a
belt of freezing rain further in
the Ohio Valley.
Snow or snow flurries continued
In the Northern Rockies and in
the Great Lakes region, while
there was more rain along the
coastal areas of Washington, Ore
gon and Northern California.
Heaviest falls were along the
Washington coast.
