Tops Record
NEW YORK OB Electrical
energy distributed throughout the
nation last week topped the nine
billion . kilowatthour mark for the
first time in the 72 year history of
the electric industry.
Edison Electric Institute said
bitter cold weather helped to shove
output in the week ended Jan. 16
to the record high of 9,013,905,000
kilowatthours. This was an 11 per
cent advance from the 8,121,357,.
000 kilowatthours in the same
week a year ago.
All sections of the' country
showed gains last week over the
same week of 1953, with advances
most pronounced in the Pacific
Northwest and the Southeast. The
Pacific Northwest was up 31.1 per
cent and the Southeast 22.2 per
cent.

MOUNT ANGEL One of the na
tion's foremost choral groups, the
Gonzaga University Men's Gle
Club, Spokane, will present its an
nual concert at 8 p.m., January 26
at the St. Mary's school auditorium
in Mount Angel.
Under the direction of Lyle W.
Moore, the Gonzagans have risen
to nationwide recognition in the
past few years, winning the grand
prize in Fred Waring's sacred mu
sic contest against all other par
ticipating colleges and universities
in the United States and Canada.

The law provides a special tax
rate for any individual who qual
ifies as a "Head of a Household."
If you are not married (or are
legally separated) at the end of
your taxable year, you qualify
as a "Head of a Household" pro
vided you furnish over talf the
cost of maintaining a home which
during the entire taxable year,
except for temporary absences,
was occupied as a principal resi
dence both by yourself and by:
(a) Any person for whom you are
entitled to an exemption, or (b)
Your unmarried child, grand
child, or stepchild, even though
such child is not a dependent.
If you are married to a nonres
ident alien at any time during
your taxable year but otherwise
meet the foregoing tests, you are
considered a "Head of a House
hold" since you are not permit
ted to file a joint return.
If your wife or husband (not
a nonresident alien) dies during
the taxable year, you do not
qualify as a "Head of a House
hold" since in such case you are
generally entitled to file a joint
return.
If you claim the status of the
"Head of a Household," you arc
required to fill in Schedule J on
page 2 of your return.
The cost of maintaining a
household includes expenditures
for such items as:
1. Maintenance of the dwelling
and premises. For example, rent
(or if the taxpayer owns his
home, real estate taxes and int
erest on a mortgage' on the
home), insurance on the dwell
ing and premises, repairs, up
keep, and domestic help.
2. Utilities. For example, gas,
telephone, electricity, water and
fuel.
3. Food consumed in the home.
The cost of maintaining
a household shall be computed
without regard to the value of
personal services rendered by a
member of the household,- in
cluding the taxpayer.
The above expenditures are to
be used only for determining
whether you are entitled to the
use of the head of household tax
ratp. Do not claim them as de
ductions on your return unless
they are otherwise allowable.

Cameron Heads
Garden Council
The Salem Garden council
Tuesday night elected David H.
Cameron president, succeeding
Robert Brady, who has served
during the last year, George
Candeauic was elected vice presi
dent and Mrs,. Morrell Crary, secretary-treasurer.
The council voted to establish
a garden center, similar to those
in eastern cities, and will acquire
the use of the barn at the Bush
House in Bush Pasture park as a
location for the ecnter.
The council gave Cameron au
thority to appoint a steering com
mittee to assemble material per
taining to the establishment and
use of of the center.
May 15 and 16 were set as
tentative dates for the Salem
Spring Flower Show and made
George Candeaux general chair
man. He said that Don Smith
would assist in arranging the
show. .
A joint meeting of Garden
Council members and members
of other garden clubs will be
held at City Hall with the Salem
Park Board Thursday afternoon
at 4 o'clock.
Robert Brady, chairman of the
proggram committee of the Salem
Rose Society announced that the
society would meet Thursday
night at 8 o'clock at the YMCA
to hear a talk by Dr. Dittebrandt
of Portland. Lee Canfield is pres
ident of the Rose Society.
First Citizen
To Be Divulged
The identity of Salem's No. 1
citizen for 1953 will be revealed
during a dinner meeting to be
held at 7 o'clock Wednesday
night at the Marion hotel.
The affair is sponsored by the
chamber of commerce and the se
lection of the individual who
will receive the honor was made
by a committee whose member
ship has not been divulged.
Gov. Paul L. Patterson will
make the principal address and
W. L. Phillips, 1952 first citizen
will introduce his successor,
whose identity will not be reveal
ed until a few minutes before he
is presented to the audience.
A number of couples have been
named to act as hosts and host
esses for the several tables that
will be set up in the large dining
room.
William H. Hammond, presi
dent of the chamber . of com
merce will preside. Dinner mu
sic will be provided by a sting
quartet from Willamette univer
sity. '
Tickets may be purchased at
the hotel.

ministry spokesman said Tuesday
the planned visit May 10 of Brit
ain's Queen Elizabeth to Gibralter
is "imprudent" and will arouse a

Another blizzard swept across
sections of the Rocky Mountains
and Plains States' Wednesday and
headed into the nation's mid-con
tinent.
Temperatures dropped to near
ly 40 degrees below zero in Mo&
tana as the icy blasts from Cana
da whistled across the border and
.pushed southward into the Central
Plains.
Snow and strong winds accom
panied the arctic air and falls of
from 3 to 6 inches of snow were in
prospect for many areas. The
mow belt extended from Minne
iota iouthwestward through Wyo
ming. .., ... ','
Readings of sub-zero were gen
eral, across Montana and the Da
kotas with the zero line extended
from around Duluth, Minn., south
westward into . Western Nebraska.
- Montana was the coldest, with
low readings early Wednesday of
-37 at Cut Bank, and -35 at Havre,
Mont. Other lows included -3i at
Dickinson, N. D.; -19 at Sheridan,
Wyo.j -9 at Aberdeen, S. D., and
-5 at Chadron, Neb. :
It was mild, but foggy and wet,
over most of the mid-continent and
in wide areas in the East and
South.
The northwest quarter of the na
tion was the only area with a sig
nificant amount of fair skies.
Moderate rain continued oyer
