Salem Academy effort fell
short here Tuesday night as Phil
omath gathered a Capitol league
victory, 47-46.
The decision raises Philomath a
notch from a cellar tie to fifth
place, leaving the Crusaders all
alone. Philomath led from the
start, at one time holding a nine
point bulge before the Academy
closed the gap. With 10 seconds
left a Crusader took one last long
shot which hit the ceiling of the
small gym.
High for Philomath was Scarth
wilh 14. Virgil Kadcnrecht had
a cool 18 for the Academy. The
Crusader jayvees won the pre
liminary, 3B-28.

Salem high turned on the scoring
drive in the third quarter to far
out-distfnee the Lebanon Warriors
and then went on to beat the War
riors 71-44. Harold Hauk s Vikings
scored 21 points to seven for the
Lebanon squad in tne third period
to sew up th game. It was a non
league game.
Junior center Bob WuU and sen
ior guard Herb Tripled led the Vik
ings to their seventh win in ten
starts, wulf came through witn 21
to nab high point honors for the
game while Triplett scored 17 in
the two quarters he played.
The Vikings took an early lead
but Lebanon came back to take
the lead 10-8 with four minutes left
in the initial quarter as Siegnor
sank a field goal. A minute later the
Vikings took the lead hack ana
want on to hold a 20-14 first quarter
lead.
Third Quarter Solum
A field goal and a free throw by
Malcolm McBride early in the sec
ond quarter put the Warriors back
into a 24-22 lead. Then Salem came
back with slightly more than two
minutes left in the half to taka the
lead or good on two shots from the
floor by Wulf. Triplett had ten mar
kers to lead Salem in the second
period.
The Vikings came back on the
floor in the final half to run away
with the game as Triplett and Wulf
led Salem to a M-38 third quarter
lead. Before the Warriors, coached
by Bob Kane, could score in the
second half, Wulf hit two field goals
and Gordy Domogalla and Triplett
each had one for eight quick points.
Not until late in the quarter
could the Warriors get a field goal
as til bottom fell out of their
shooting average. Salem continued
to get the edge in the final quarter
as tiiey added 13 points to six for
Lebanon.
Uses IS Players
Hauk used all 15 players .suited
up for the game as the reserves
continued to hit the basket con
sistently. Murvel Stone led the los
ers In scoring with ten while his
teammate, McBride, had nine. The
Vikings had 29 field goals to 14 for
Lebanon.
Salem now heads for Eugene Fri
day for a tough Big Six clash with
the Eugene Axemen. Eugene, the
defending state runner-ups, are
heavily favored to finish near the
top in the league race. Salem now
has a 3-1 loop mark.
In the preliminary game Lee
Gustafson's Salem Junior varsity
scored a 53-34 win over the Leba
non Junior varsity. Salem held Le
banon to but four field goals in
the entire game while the winners
were getting 19. Sixty fouls were
called in the game with 33 on the
Vikings.
Bob Tom led the winners wilh 11
points while Bob Foreman and Dan
Luby each had nine. Adkins led
the losers with seven. The halftime
score favored Salem 25-18. It was
the eighth win for Salem with their
only two losses being to the Sa
lem high varsity reserves.
