three Northwest conference vic
toriei in i row last night here as
it frolicked to a 100-78 conquest
of College of Idaho.
Willamettee. the only unbeat
en club in the circuit, showed
why it is considered now to be a
contender for the title which
has eluded the Bearcats since
the 1931-52 season.
The dramatic quest for 100
points came from the crowd, not
from Willamette generalissimo
John Lewis, who cleared the
bench with the score 91-78 and
let the lads play who had done
their playing mentally from the
bench previously.
The last time Willamette hit
the century mark was in the
1951-53 season, 103-69 over Lin
field, and in the 1951-52 year,
103-62 over Lewis and Clark.
Scores Final 7 Points -
It was a substitute guard, Dale
Gustafson. who gave out with a
displsy of shooting as be tanked
the last seven points and single
handedly, almost, pulled the
team up to the 100 mark with
about five seconds remaining
He got an assist from an inter
ception by We Malcolm, and
fans roared their approval.
Contributing an unkn own
quantity was the fouling out of
College of Idaho's two scoring
stars, R. C. Owens and George
Makini, in the third quarter.
Owens, after a razzle-dazzle per
formance of ball handling and
shooting, got his fifth Joul with
only 2:30 gone. Makini, the
freshman flash from Hawaii,
Joined Owens two minutes later
With them out, Willamette
outscored the Coyotes 25-16 in
the third quarter and added 31
sizzling points in the fourth quar
ter. Pouring in the most points
were Jerry McCallister, Neal
Causbie, Dick Hoy, Bill ColvaTd
and Pete Reed, but it was Mc
Callister's uncanny jump shots
in the third quarter which caught
the fans' eves.
44 37 at Half
The first quarter was an even
affair, with the Bearcats leading
at the buzzer, 18-17. Tom Gocd
ing got nine of his 13 in this
frame and held Owens to four
points.
Captain Hoy, forward, got hot
In the second stanza and dumped
in 14 from every angle, while
Owens earned six for C. of I.
This gave the Bearcats a 44 37
iead at the halftime rest.
Scoring honors went to Hov
rnd McCallister with 20 each.
Reed got 18 and Gooding 13. For
the losers, Owens and Dick
Spiess each cornered 16. Up
to last night, Owens, a Negro
sophomore, had been averaging
22.2 and was leading small col
lege rebounders with 26.1 per
game. He snagged 16 rebound
last night.
In the preliminary, the Bear
kittens defeated the local YMCA
team, 63-5B. Bill Turley was
high with 14 for the winners and
Wally Unruh, YMCA forward,
was worth 22 points.
Next Saturday the Bearcats
will meet Linfield at McMinn
ville, and on Feb. 5 they will
play liieir nexi home game,
against Lewis and Clark.

Not So Tough-Gorky
The strong-armed George Du-
sette will team with Carl Eng
strom tonight to try to show the
Gorky brothers they are wrong in
asserting, "Competition in the
Northwest is not so tough."
Granted that It takes a combina
tion of roughness and trickery to
beat the Russians, Soldat and Ivan
Gorky, Dusette and Engstrom are
handicapped by being classified as
decent guys.
The Armory card will start at
1:30 with a special event matching
Ivan Kameroff, the "bear-hug"
professional, and Danno McDonald.
In the semi-final session ot fast-
ones who dish out the action will
be "The Great" Yamato, master
of the sleeper hold - and judo,
against Chester Wallick.
It was Soldat Gorky who piped
up after last week's hard-headed
triumph over Engstrom and Da
vid Jons: "I didn't even have to
use my wolfleap." Hit wolfleap,
said to be a Siberian method of
killing wolves caught in traps, Is
aimed at the throat with the shoul
der. The Gorkys finally won when
Ivan tossed Engstrom through the
ropes, striking Soldat'a head and
knocking Engstrom out.
