The' annual Drum Majorette
Contest sponsored by the Salem
Elks is dated for Friday night,
January 22, starting at 8 o'clock
at the High School Gymnasium. -
Tom Hill and Vernon Wisear
son will again be co-chairmen for
the event, zzi they say that not
less than 20 entries are expected
from high schools scattered about
the state. The Salem High School
band will again play for the event
and admittance to the public will
do witnoui enarge.
Silverton Reports
47 Fire Calls for '53
SILVERTON ' Fire chief,
Larry Carpenter, of the volun
teers reports 47 calls being
mad during the year 1453. An
estimated Ion of $43,700, of
which (30,000 was in the to

the Robbina Confectionery in
the N. Water St. block.
Eleven calls were made to
the rural district
The chief. Carpenter, re
ported 720 man-hours put in
by the volunteers.

Miss Universe Drops Title by Marriage

Universe is now California's own
and she has a new title: Mrs. Ron
nie Marengo.
The 17-year-old French beauty,
Chriatiane Martel, was married
yesterday to the 21-year-old son
of a department store owner and
left happily in a shower of rice
for a Palm Springs honeymoon.
They'll be back here in two
weeks and move into a new, ranch
style home with a swimming pool
and be will continue managing a
suburban branch of his father's
store.

Salem Elks Thursday night and
a fine ahow featuring local talent
much of it of professional class,

tainment committee.
Included will oe Stan Williams
who will shar the spotlight with
Betty Van Cleave in two out
standing acta. Williams wis fea
tured in the Broadway shows "It's
Great To Be Alive" and "Alive
and Kicking.'' Also he has ap-

cuits. He has a tap dancing style
that is unique.
Betty Van Cleave, a belle of
the south, came to Salem recently
from New Or leans.
' "As a torch singer," says the
committee announcement "she
brings us that wonderful blues
and Dixieland rhythm. Having ap
peared on radio and television as
well as in many outstanding clubs
she is a welcome addition to our
program.
The Dixielanders, a baton twirl
er, aa acrobatic act and the Grue
some Twosome in a new act will
round out the show which will be
opened and closed by the Chora-
leers. Clyde Cook wiU be emcee.
A buffet supper win be served
after the show.
A short lodge session will be
called at I o'clock and the show
will start at 8:30.
NEW DALLAS RESIDENT
DALLAS - Mr. and Mrs. Gord
on Cota and daughters, Christine
and Kathleen, of Longview, Wash.,
have arrived la Dallas to make
their borne. Cota began work this
week as bookeeper at the Polk
County Federal Savings and Loan
association. He has been with
Montgomery Ward ft Co. at Van
couver and Longview, and is
Linfield college graduate.
