WASHINGTON (ffV-A speech
by Chief Justice Earl Warren
Thursday evening will be car
ried nationally by all four ma
jor radio networks, Columbia un
iversity announced today.
' Warren will be the principal
speaker at the Columbia univer
sity bi centennial Alexander
Hamilton dinner, which is spon
sored by Columbia alumni.
The address will be Warren's
first major speech since his ap
pointment to the high tribunal
- Columbia said he would spesk
about 25 minutes, starting at
about 10:35 p.m. EST.
Six Tree Farms
Certified in State
PORTLAND Ml Thirteen tree
farms, totalling 10.440 privately
owned acres, have been certified
by the Industrial Forestry Assn.
This, plus the addition of 6,717
acres to existing farms, raises the
total number of tree farms in the
Douglas fir region to lot, with a
total of ,KS,33 acres, Ray F.
Morse, Longview, chairman of the
association a. board of directors,
reported.
' Six of the new tree farms are In
Oregon, raising the state's total to
74 with 1,655,228 acres. Washington
has 12t farms with 2,601,405 acres.

March of Dimes
Collects $587
A total of $587 was collected
Saturday in the Msrch of Dimes
on Liberty Street to be used in
the wsr against pouo.
In the competition, with Mer
lon Post 661, Veterans of Foreign
Wars, on the east side of the
street, and the State Industrial
Accident Commission chapter of
the Oregon State Employes Asso
ciation on the west side, the vet
erans won with $304 contributed
on their tide and $283 on the
other.
The winning team was cap
tained by Melvin Clemens and co
eaptaina on the other side were
Don Parker and Francis Ely.
There will be t similar com
petition next Saturday, but the
competitors have not yet been
selected. The event Saturday was
haiidicapped by windy and wet
weather.

J. P. (Jack) Schimberg. a res
ident of Salem for more than 20
years and for the past 2V years
in charge of a&praisal of real

former Assessor Tsd Sbelton, an
nounced Monday that he would
file for the office of county as
sesso. on the republican ticket
Schimberg said that if he is
elected, one of his first projects
will be that of equalizing the
land values in the city of Salem,
which he considered to be con
siderably out of line in many in
stances. He added that he is in
favor of the revaluation program
worked out by the state tax de
partment and the county court
during a conference of some time
ago.

VIENNA Wt Oscar Straus,
fames Viennese-born composer of
"The Chocolate Soldier." and more
than 50 other operettas, died of
heart disease .Monday in Bad

Though he won fame In the same
field, he was no relation to Vien-
i na s waits .king, Johann Strauss.
Straus fled his native Austria at
the 1938 Anschluss and lived in
