IT COULD BE VERSE:

uc MLUUKA CUSIKS TO LIVE WITH I'S
We want to welcome Joe Palooka to our iporti pate aa
dally fixture he, hii magnifielent shoulders and fists, hi clean
living, Ann, the infant who should have been a boy, knothead
Knobby, jughead Jerry and all the Australian boxers whom Joe
will barely defeat the comir.g year. Here's why, the Palooka
comic was moved to sports: It is a Capital Journal feature and
used to be run on the classified ad page, but the ad page now
runs in both the Statesman and Journal without being revamped.
So hello, Joe.
A word of explanation might be in order about the merger
of The Capital Journal and the Statesman. There is no merger
in news or sports only in production, advertising and circula
tion. We who toss the words around and still have our competi
tive individuality, the eagerness to scoop one another which is
. the spice of life. We have a com
mon switchboard where a pretty
girl funnels calls to one side or
the other.
TRIBUTE TO AD FVTSCHMAV
Coach Paul Durham of Lin-
field college picked Ad Rutsch
man as his athlete of the year for
Yamhill county. Durham, writing
in ni McMinvine-Hegister sport!
column, is unusually laudatory,
paying his 182 pound graduating
fullback the type of tribute sel
dom given the living.
Durham describes Rutschman
as a "driving fullback who played
well enough to be picked on the
Little All -American first team
but had to be contented with'
Honorable Mention rating.
"Rntschman is the type of
athlete with whom a coach likes
to work. He is a fierce competi
tor, never gives up, hi a tre
mendous leader because of his
desire lo win, never beefs, never questions the roach's Instruc
tions or strategy, and in general does his best at all times.
And on top of all this in the way of attiude, he has remark
able abiliy.
"It's little wonder that the Linfield team made Rutsrh their
captain for the year; or that the lettermen's club proposed to the
aturient body that his jersey number "32" be retired and never worn
again by a Linfield football player; or that many Hillsboro high
athletes have followed him to Linfield; or that he was elected of
the "Cardinal L"; or that several professional football teams are
interested in him; or that he is sought after as a high school
coach by several principals about the stale; or that the McMinnville
Kiwants club called an "Ad Ruschman day" in McMinnville . . ."
Durham conferred coach - of -
anon Ray Stephens of Amity and
wis state Z runner-up and Willamina's basketball team waa league
to-champion and the football team won the district A-Z title.
WHAT TO DO WFTH 7 FOOTERS
Oregon State college freshmen have the distinction of having
a forward who is eight inches taller than the center. He is
the 7 foot Phil Shadoin of Corvallis and the renter is Ron
Smart of Astoria. Shadoin is being groomed for a spot with
7 3 Swede Halbrook next year and it's a cinch he would see
little action as Halbrook's replacement. Reports are that
Shadoin handles himself wen and is Improving. Consider the
possibilities with two 7 footers camped beside the basket!
shadoin, incidentally, held Swede to his lowest total while in
high school one field goal before Shadoin fouled out

their bid ia the Northwest con
ference race by edging the Whit

last night
Willamette, which last year
tied for second place and con
sidered one of the several strong
teams thia season did not show
its potential strtngth through
out the game but nevertheless
was the better team on the floor.
eed-Hey Carry Lead
After scoring inly three points
in the first half, Willamette's big
forward, Pete Reed, got hot in
the second half to bring his
night's work to 17 points. Jerry
McCallister, guard, and Tom
Gooding, center, each added 12
to the cause, while Biek Hoy,
who helped carry the load in the
rally, wound up with 13.
However, Willamette had to
relinquish scoring honors to lit
tle Don Parker, Missionary
guard, who dropped through IS
before fouling out in the last
seconds of play.
The Bearcats jumped to a 14
12 quarter-time score behind the
shooting of Gooding and Hoy,
and the second period was a see
saw session that saw the lead
rise above three point! only
once. At that, Whitman came out
on top at halftime, 20-28.
Led by Reed, who finally
found his batting eye in the third
frame, the Bearcats pulled ahead
at 48-43 going into the final quar
ter. Gap Closed at Finish
Holding a five -point lead
throughout most of the closing
period, Willamette played a more
deliberate ball control game un
til time ran out Whitman put
several scares into Bearcat fans
by pulling within three points,
only to have Hoy, or Neal Caus
bie, or Duane Shield, or McCal
lister not a decisive shot.
Whitman, considered by many
ra m ins nurk horse of the con
ference, brought 10 lettermen
into the contest The Missionar
ies shot well but couldn't work
the ball in.
In direct contract, the Bear
cats worked the ball aa well, if
not better, than any time to date.
Thia especially holds true in the
case of the two guards, McCal
lister and last year's All-Conference
ehoiee, "Lefty" Shield.
