This imposing, impressive, vine-covered building stands on the crest ; of a mountainous hill with a pic turesque view of the Willamette Valley, snow-capped mountains surrounded by beautiful foliage, adornment unsurpassed anywhere in the Pacific Northwest This is one of the two oldest mausoleums in Oregon. It was formally opened to the oublie and dedicated on 'Memorial Day, 1914, with 273 crypts. Literally, Mt Crest Ab bey is a spot deeply reverea oy ISalemites and Oregonians. ! This community mausoleum came under the direction of Lloyd A. Rigdon, who with asso ciates, took over the operation of Mt Crest Abbey in 1928. Tne following year, 1927, the Mt Crest Mausoleum Company was in cor- oorated. with Dr. B. L. Steeves as president and Lloyd T. Rigdon, secretary-treasurer, bucn a line acceptance had been given the mausoleum that it was found nec essary to construct the first ad dition in 1929-30, and 330 add! tional ervots were added. In 1938 the south corridor was complete ly maroieizeo, woicn aoaeu w m distinction. More and more through the vears. without any loss of rever ence for those who have passed on, there has been a trend on the part of thinking people to give consideration to arrange ments for the last resting place for their dear ones "In Advance of Need." Many have come to realize that no resting place is superior to "indoor memorials in marble and bronze." This ac ceptance has been so universal in this section of Oregon that live additions to the original mausole um nave been necessary to meet the normal reauirements. A new addition was completed early in 1949 providing: for 300 crypts, and eolumbariums of niches in both bronze and mar ble providing memorials for some 800 cremated-remans. To day Iii rough construction work has been nearly completed tor a new corridor which will provide for 300 entombments, ' single crypts, couch crypts, and coucn- eompanlon crypts. These litest additions are being finished in beautiful matched and polished Tennessee with areas of beauti ful foreign marble. No description of the beauty and impressiveness of Mt Crest Abbey could do ft justice. One must visit it and be conducted into its various sections to fully appreciate the thought and plan ning that has cone into 4ts ar rangements. The new corridor will be completed about July of this year. However, this construc tion work will not in the least, affect the selection of comoart mcnts. or of holding services. Those who might cons'der or con template selection of crypts or niches can do it at any time they desire. An invitation by Lloyd T. Rlsdon is extended to every one to visit Mt Crest Abbey Mausoleum & Crematorium, lo cated at the west end u( Hurt street, and see for himself or herself the arrangements that ! have been made. Entombments i will be made in this new corridor. , according to present plans, in I about 60 days. In the meantime temporary entombments may be made aa against the time that the new addition is completed. In keeping with the need and requests received, Lloyd T. Rig don added cremation service in 1936 with eolumbariums of niches. At that time the name of the in corporated operating company was changed from Mt Crest Mauaaleum Co. to Salem Mauso leum Crematorium, Inc., which has the complete direction of operating the Mt Crest Abbey Mausoleum Crematorium. Lloyd T. Rigdon is president of this company. Lloyd T. Rigdon was horn In Salem and has devoted his life time to alleviation of the sorrow snd mourning that goes with the laying away of a loved one. He comes from one of the older pio neer lamiues in this section of Oregon. Early in his business lifetime he served ss a licensed embalmer, funeral director, mor tician.' This background of ex perience has enabled him to plan and bring into fruition all of the restful and efficient arrangements uiai are provided at Mt Crest Ab bey. This includes a beautiful drawing room chapel to which is now being added a nrivata mom for the family. An electric organ "tne fcverett Orgatron," is used for attendant music. If desired the complete service mav he held here, or the so-called, "commit tal service," following the main funeral service at the mortuary. church or residence. There is no charge made for the use of the chapel and organ. All of the additions and com. pleted facilities now available in Mt Crest Abbey have been plan um who me inougni in mind of future additions from time to time. Ample ground space has been acquired to take car of many future additions in the years ahead, without in any way making the eomoleted structure anv less impressive. In all sales of coroMrtmentm. crypts and niches, a percentage is piacea into an endowment fund, which is steadily growing into a sizeable sum, and, with the many additions in the years ahead, aided by bequests, will be ample to provide for. the upkeep ana maintenance of. Mt Crest by. !f and -hen ths final building addition is eomoleted.
