Today and for almost a.ers provide this service. The
quarter of a centeury Consoli
dated Freightways is, and has
been, the solution to depend
able transportation distribu
tion in the west from the Pa
cific Coast to the Great Lakes.
Since its establishment in 1929.
Consolidated Freightways has
grown to be the second largest
i motor freight system In the na
tion. Its average annual vol
ume of business totals nearly
1140 millions ol dollars. Thou
sands of shippers, located in
900 key cities in the nation are
served, daily, over Consolidat
ed's 19,000 miles of routes in
its eleven-state system through
the northern part of the United
States between the Pacific
Coast and the industrial mid
west. The 3,850 trained men
and women are all eager to
serve the public efficiently.
Consolidated' over-all opera
tion in Salem includes motor
freight service with merchan
dise storage; Twin way moving'
van service, pool car distribu
tion, packing and crating, local
cartage etc.
Since 1947 s terminal has
been maintained in Salem. To
day this motor transport com
pany can rightfully be classed
as local industrial service in
stitution. There ire 18 local
people regularly employed, in
cluding 8 driver salesmen who
operate the moving vans and
city pick-up trucks that axe
permanently located here. Con
solidated line-haul trucks bring
to Salem daily a large volume
of commodities such as food
stuffs, consumer goods of all
types as well as machinery etc.
Vera Hasbrook, a native of
Salem has been local manager
for Consolidated Freightways
since Dec. 17, 1951. He became
affiliated with this motor-transport
company in January, 1943,
as a transport operator. Hal
Johnson is sales representative
in Salem and Horace Hickman
is dock foreman. Four court
eous "Freighters" are employ
ed In the offices at 1435 East
Hoyt street.
A complete "pacK-crate-
ship" service is maintained in
Salem for both domestic and
export shipments. The service
includes packing, crating and
shipping products or household
goods destined for domestic or
over-seas points. This includes
household goods to and from
any point in the United States
and Canada as exclusive agents
for the North American Van
lines. All of the vans for mov-.
ing household goods are spe
cially designed including prop
er padding, storage arrange
ments, etc., on a parity with
the very best. Standardized
equipment, including long-haul
truck - trailers, tractors and
moving vans are used by Con
solidated Freightways over
their entire system.
"Twinway" home-to-h o m e
moving service by Consolidat
ed Freightways is the easy way
to move. "Twinway helps
plan the many things that need
possessions are loaded carefully
directly into the vans where
they ride safely and comfort
ably, beautifully protected
with thick, clean pads. This
service saves packing, crating,
time, energy and extra han
dling. It is excellent for long
hauls and short hauls, city to
city, or "Just across the street."
The 'Twinway" number two
service is ideal for household
goods which are not suitable
for moving with the regular
vans. Trained men will care
fully pack, crate and handle
the shipping by rail, motor
freight, air or water, to any
place in the nation or to any
foreign country.
Consolidated Freightways
was the first motor freight or
ganization to design and build
its own highway units, the cele
brated Freightliner trucks and
trailers. It pioneered the use
of light metals, low-pressure
pneumatic tires, diesel engines
and adequate braking systems.
Consolidated was the first mo
tor carrier to install insur
ance, retirement and benefit
plans for its employees. This
truck transport company was
the first winner of the National
Safety Council trophy; the
first three-time winner of the
Trailmoblle trophy for fleet
safety, and bas the distinction
of being the first trucking firm
in the west to be awarded a
contract for hauling the U. S.
Mail by trucks, between major
cities.
The northwest's largest net
work of leased wire facilities
is the key to Consolidated'!
intricate and highly effective
equipment dispatching opera
tion. Control of nearly 2,000
pieces of line-haul equipment
is maintained through instant
TWX contact with all of the
company terminals such as the
one located in Salem; with
driver dispatchers, with shop
and maintenance coordinators
and with branches of the sales
department.
Consolidated Truck Lines
was organized April 1, 1929,
as a holding company and, dur
ing that year, purchased con
trolling interest in four Oregon
independent freight lilies. Year
by year, other lines have been
acquired extending the opera
tions, today, to an eleven-state
system covering every day, 19,-
000 miles of routes.
The corporate name of the
company was changed as of
March 28, 1939 to Consolidat
ed Freightways, Inc.
Salem shippers are certainly
fortunate in having available
this nation-wide efficient trans
portation service in keeping
with the city's importance as an
industrial and commercial sup
ply center. One of Consolidat
ed Freightways greatest assets
is the courteous drivers on the
highways. All of these court
eous and friendly drivers give
first consideration to fellow
travelers using passenger automobiles.
