Jan. 4 Dear Marian: Secretary and Mrs. D(uilas McKay re turned by train and plane from Salem last night, having switched transportation med ia at Chicago in order that the Secretary would he hack in time for the cahinet meet ing at 8 30 a m. today. Following the cahi net session, he spoke at a lucheon of the League of Republican Women of the Dis trict of Columbia at the Mayflower hotel's Chinese Room. Mrs. McKay was an honor guest of the League. In her green suit with matching shoes and white hat, she could have been an echo of Christmas coloring or a harbinger of spring. The large aud ience gave an enthusiastic welcome to the McKays and the Secretary's talk was fre quently interrupted with applause. Mrs. Walter Williams, wife of the I'nder Secre tary ot Commerce, also a I'acilic Northwes tern resident from the city of Seattle, intro c'ueed Secretary McKay. She is serving as program chairman this year for the League. I mentioned yesterday the return nf the Congressional members In their absence, the Capitol has gone through a cleaning up process, as well as some remodeling. One special addition to the Senate area has been two new radio and TV soundproof studios. One is near the press gallery and is Intended for Interviews with senators by radio and TV men and the other in the basement provides a place for senators to record radio or television talks to be sent to their borne districts. There have been such facilities in the Senate and House OffKe Buildings but the new quarters will mors) adequately serve the increasing acti vity in this field. Another added feature this year Is the plscement of weather maps in the House DIRECTING TEA ARRANGEMENTS to Be Saturday Marion hotel. Mrs. Dennis Patch is to in troduce the speaker. Seems to me that keeping current with the frequently unpredictable Washing ton weather would absorb all of the time that could be devoted to weather surveys. Ever since 1888 there has been a 32-foot blank space n the historical frieze in the Capitol rotunda. This summer a New York artist, Allyn Cox. finished the panels to complete the frieze which depicts American historical events from the discovery of Am erica by Columbus to the birth of aviation. The aviation mural was one completed ny Mr. Cox, and the others were the Civil War and the Spanish-American War panels. Also for the first time since he tricie was started by Constantino Brumidi in 1877, the entire series of frescoes wa- given a clean ing. Congressional members will find many other improvements but the few recounted will give you an ldei, of the activity that has gone on during the vacation period. The first Oregonian to call at Interior for the beginning of the nev year was Arthur V. Carlson, ot Portland, many times a business caller at state off. s In Salem. After completing some business for Oregon lumtxr interest' in New York, he came to Washington to present a gift nf two Peace rosea to the President and Mrs. Elsenhow er from the Royal Rosarians. W: lie on the subject ot Oregon gifts. I must tell you that one ot the thrills of the New Year'r start was a live pound tin of sea fresh Oregon Jumbo crab legs sent air express.
