Br HARK M. TAYLOR
W have often mentioned in
these columni, the All-Amerl-csn
lelectiom for rotes and
flowers ol different kinds each
year. The All-American Selec
tions Board Is composed of
more than 40 representatives
throughout the country who
mike actual trials or tests of
new hybrids that may have
been developed. The composite
report of these trial Judges de
termines the All American
election for a current year.
New varieties In vegetables,
ai well as flowers, are given
thorough testing In the various
established proving grounds in
order that the All-American
choice will bring the best of the
new varieties to the attention of
the home gardener. Vegetables
for the home garden merit just
as much attention in these trials
as do the new floral introdue
tlons. Thus, we can be sure that
the home gardener may Just as
easily have the best in vegeta
bles in his garden and should
sot be satisfied with less.
It Is authorltively reported
that 1000-year-old Manchurian
Lotus seeds have been sprouted
and a mature plant grown from
one of the seeds. Corn cobs in
the Tularosa Caves of New
Mexico are dated as over 2000
years old, when the Mongolian
Indians grew beans and squash
as well as maize.
The plan of Nature's surviv
al of the fittest, in the plant
world, is a most slow process.
However, as In other fields,
science has speeded up Nature's
processes. By coordinating re
search testing and screening of
new varieties produced by Na
ture, or with Man's assistance,
Is an established process with
findings scientifically tabulated
to assure the gardener of the
worth of these discoveries or
developments without waiting
- for Nature to prove suchj
through its age-old "survival
of the fittest" processes. In this
country these studies and re
commendations are analyzed
and compiled by the All-Amer-1
c a n Selections Committee
which annually announces
awards or recommendations.
Tor example, the All-American
Hose Selections were based up
on tests made throughout the
country. Including the Interna
tional Hose Test Gardens at
Portland, and upon trials made
at Oregon State college as well
as by reports made from local
growers, amateur and commer
cial. Thus, the All-American re
commendations can be accept
ed as scientifically sound, and
not )ust one individual's per
sonal preference.
